A storm of protest over reduction of port hours

About a half hour before the meeting on Thursday evening at the Roseau City Center, Jason Schmelz, the Area Port Director with U.S. Customs and Border Protection in Pembina, possibly had no inclination that a tsunami would shortly erupt in the same room where wedding guests happily toast the bride and groom.

It was the calm before the storm.

"We are continuously looking at our workload, our staffing, our operating costs, and how we can adjust hours at those locations," said Mr. Schmelz, who's been with Customs and Border Protection (CBP) since 1995.
