Roseau - Gladys T. Carlson was born to John and Thilda (Nordgaarden) Novak on June 28, 1940, in South St. Paul. They moved to the Lake Bottom, north of Roseau in 1942.

She attended a small country school in Ross until her 11th grade year. In 1957 Gladys met her future husband, Glenn Brotherston, at Christy’s Café in Roseau. He was on leave from the military. In 1958 she bought a bus ticket to the cities for $35 and worked at a potato chip factory for two weeks. After that she babysat, where she met a lady who was modeling.
