Nobody is ever guilty these days

One of the finest examples for always telling the truth was impressed upon me at Christ the King Catholic Grade School in south Minneapolis.

Back then, in the 1950s, justice was swift at the hands of the Sisters of St. Joseph, who adhered to the "spare the rod and spoil the child" philosophy.

They did damn little spoiling.

It was in the winter of 1957 when we came out of school at the end of the day on a Friday and ran after a car as it slowly drove by.

Mike Flannery, Don Baker, and I grabbed a hold of the back bumper and enjoyed a great ride on the snow-packed street as we happily skied away...
