Oh, the Golden Years!

Now that I’m in my eighth decade, I skip the sports and go directly online to the obits - mainly, The New York Times and the Washington Post.

Even if we’ve never crossed paths, I meet old friends and older enemies in these obituaries - the rogues and the respectable, the noted and the relatively unknown who did something truly unusual, the brilliant and the boozers, the crooks and the con artists - which is why many politicians, upon their deaths, make their appearances first in these national obituaries.

Their deaths aren’t important.

It’s their lives that are, and it is...
