  • Back to Lawn Chairs

    Julie Elick Olson|Nov 30, 2024

I was going down the hallway at work and saw two inchworms. They are little and approximately one inch long. I will step on crickets..they seem to come in unnoticed and then brag, with a lot of noise because they got in. The inchworm brings back memories..Back in Duluth we had a record album by The Sandpipers. The Sandpipers sang... Inchworm, inchworm, measuring the marigolds You and your arithmetic, you'll probably go far. Inchworm, inchworm, measuring the marigolds Seems to me you'd stop and...

  • Julie's Thanksgiving Column

    Julie Elick Olson|Nov 23, 2024

My last name is now “Olson”. Traditions go from family to family. As a child we would always go to the house of a relative. Everyone would bring a dish. (Never empty!) Pies, and more pies. I remember buns and lefse. I also remember the “smell” of Lutefisk. We would always have turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy. Eating corn, maybe squash with brown sugar, and sweet pickles, would make my mouth salivate. I loved Thanksgiving meals. Now and then to make life easier, Pastor Joe and I w... Full story

  • Keeping Watch

    Julie Elick Olson|Nov 16, 2024

by Oswald Chambers When Jesus says, "Watch with me," he is telling us to watch with no private point of view at all. In the early stages of our life with him, we do not watch with Jesus; we watch for him and expect him to watch with us. It takes us time to begin to view everything that happens in the way our Lord views it-through the revelation of the Bible. Jesus asked his disciples to watch with him in the garden of Gethsemane, when peril was close at hand. In the same way, he comes to us, in...

  • "And it came to pass…"

    Julie Elick Olson|Nov 9, 2024

My memory is not what it used to be. I can think about mailing a bill when I leave the house. When I am down to the first stop light, I automatically turn left onto Hwy 11. Getting to work, I notice the bill on the seat next to me. Goodness! It’s like that. Up on Minnesota Hill, Joe and I get up at 2:30 each morning. Making our coffee, I make my chocolate coffee. He takes his with cream. I make an English muffin with butter, peanut butter, and jelly. Sitting in my kitchen rocking chair I put o...

  • "Fake News"…Or, more than meets the eye.

    Julie Elick Olson|Nov 2, 2024

Peter Dizikes MIT News Office Publication Date: March 8, 2018 A new study by three MIT scholars has found that false news spreads more rapidly on the social network Twitter than real news does — and by a substantial margin. “We found that falsehood diffuses significantly farther, faster, deeper, and more broadly than the truth, in all categories of information, and in many cases by an order of magnitude,” says Sinan Aral, a professor at the MIT Sloan School of Management and co-author of a new...

  • Another opportunity for team work

    Julie Elick Olson|Oct 26, 2024

Window Replacement Time Just in time, a Marvin window to replace the one in our dining room. We have a 100- year-old house up at Minnesota Hill. The window mentioned has a ¼ inch gap where the glass should fit in at the top section. Marvin Window has a very, very good window cost for its employees. We are so thankful for this. Twenty-Five years ago my father and I replaced all the windows in our Roseau house. It was a difficult job because we had a dull chisel. After nine windows were...

  • Going Up Hill and Down Hill, and Up Again

    Julie Elick Olson|Oct 19, 2024

Ephesians 5: 15-16 Be very careful, then, how you live-not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. After every period of exaltation, we are brought down with a sudden rush into things as they are, where it is neither beautiful nor poetic nor thrilling. The height of the mountaintop is measured by the drudgery of the valley-but it's in the valley that we have to live for the glory of God. When we are on the mountaintop, we see the glory of God, but...

  • So Proud I Am!

    Julie Elick Olson|Oct 12, 2024

It was a great weekend! On Saturday, October 12th, Londa Olson (my daughter) had an opportunity as well as many other artists, to be part of the Grand Opening of the WARROAD RIVERPLACE. On display was one of Londa’s penciled drawings. Her drawing, the historic Penturen Church, is noted for not only its location out in Beltrami Forest but also for its history. Despite the high wind advisory people were not deterred from attending the Grand Opening. The event had many different activities to p...

  • Update...Digging holes "Ka-ching!!"

    Julie Elick Olson|Sep 28, 2024

So the wedding was held up on Joes land. It was in a big field up on Minnesota Hill. So, here is another story with pictures... Outhouses were the issue and expensive to rent. We decided to take it to a higher level. Higher like, (the "hole" is lower), but you have to have something up on top (higher) to sit in. I remember seeing a two story outhouse once out in Montana somewhere. They do that over there, ya sure they do. I couldn't figure out how it worked. There was a hole in the ceiling,... Full story

  • Sheep

    Julie Elick Olson|Sep 21, 2024

Do you ever wonder why God compares us to sheep in the Bible? There has to be a reason why Jesus refers to Himself as the Good Shepherd and us, His sheep. 1. Sheep have no sense of direction Many people say sheep have no sense of direction–at all. In fact, they will follow whoever is leading them, even if it leads them off a cliff. Remember the question, “If your friend jumps off a cliff, would you do it too?” Well, they actually would. In Eastern Turkey, about 1500 unattended sheep fell off a...
