It was a local Who's Who in the criminal justice system a week ago Friday afternoon in Courtroom One at the Roseau County Courthouse. Judge Donna Dixon wasn't in her black robe and nobody was wearing orange and sporting handcuffs. Instead, they were undergoing still another training seminar before the Roseau County Drug Court begins operation this coming spring. Maria Pahlen, who will serve as the coordinator, noted that a three-day training session at a site yet to be determined in March will...
On a late January afternoon in Thompson, North Dakota, Tallena (née Lisell) Thom, laughed about her busy life as a stay-at-home mom and author, her messy house, and her travels as a hockey parent and Cub Scout leader. Oh, she can write! Not only has she published at least four books on Amazon, she also writes a blog in which she tackles touchy and pertinent topics. There is one other thing. The women in her books aren't dainty damsels waiting to be rescued. They're take-charge women. Visualize...
It's really hard to overlook Benjamin Roy Mangum, 15, in the Roseau High School hallways. At six-five and almost one-sixth of a ton, the Roseau sophomore has a disarming smile that makes him a popular guy at school. Here's the rest of the scouting report from Assistant Principal Aaron Nelson. "I see him in the hallways and he has a hop in his step every day, always smiles, always says hello, and is respectful and polite," he said, mentioning that Ben is a new student this school year. "Like any...
On Sunday evening, already rich on the thought of collecting on a $2 bet with Oliver Ullman, who will someday push my scrawny remains into the crematorium at Helgeson Funeral Chapel in Roseau, my money vanished as Tom Brady, the greatest quarterback ever - sorry, Joe Montana and Terry Bradshaw - picked apart the Atlanta Falcons' defense like a pickpocket fleecing intoxicated tourists in New Orleans during the Mardi Gras. Who cries over two bucks? Me! I'd rather have my wife divorce me than lose...
A week ago Thursday evening in Bemidji, the Rams had a fine first period as they held the Lumberjacks scoreless but were unable to score themselves. Then came the 2nd period and everything went south as the Jacks scored three unanswered goals, and it was "Bar the door, Kate!" because Leo Spry, Chase Hartje, and Alex Pollock had blown up any Ram chances of making a game out of a very important Section 8AA contest. And when Hunter Olson scored the Jacks' 4th goal in the 3rd period, it was the...
On Tuesday evening at the Ralph Engelstad Arena in Thief River Falls, it was pay back time for the Rams, who lost earlier in the season to the Prowlers in Roseau. Make no mistake about this game. The Rams weren't shooting blanks, and they were all over the TRF netminder Nick Corneliusen, who saw more pucks than luck as he was bushwhacked with 18 shots on net in the 1st period. What a period! Leading it off was Bryden Stoskopf (assists to Aaron Huglen and Nathan Adrian) at the 2:56 mark and...

Sophomore Chandler Mooney notched his 100th career varsity win in the 145 pound championship finals in Fertile last Saturday when he pinned Pelican Rapids' Casey Kulsrud at the 3:19 mark of the 2nd period. Additionally, Chandler was named the tourney MVP in the 12 team field that saw Minot run away with top honors followed by West Fargo and then Roseau.
