  • Wear a Poppy in Remembrance

    Judy Bernat|May 7, 2016

The poppy program is one of our most beloved programs of the American Legion Auxiliary because the poppies are made by "Our Veterans." For years the Roseau American Legion Auxiliary Unit #24 has had help preparing for the Annual Poppy Day, from the sixth grade teachers. The Auxiliary Poppy Committee teaches the children what the Poppy symbolizes. One sixth grade class is chosen each year to make the Poppy Posters. Two or three winning poppy posters are chosen from the class and sent to the 9th District American Legion Auxiliary Convention....

These are just some of the words LifeCare Medical Center uses to describe a humble group of community members called LifeCare volunteers! • Bankruptcy

    Al Buffum|May 7, 2016

As reported on the various news broadcast... Puerto Rico is in deep debt and is on the verge of bankruptcy. Hence... to get out from under Puerto Rico MAY seek a bailout from the federal government. I am placing an emphasis on the word MAY because as far as I have heard the possibility of bankruptcy is merely a thought under consideration by the central government at this time. Whether it gets the support and approval by both Houses of Congress remains up in the air. On the other hand... it is...

High wind and hail from thunderstorms, tornados, wildfires, and flooding are just a few of the threats that accompany summer weather patterns in the upper Midwest. Manmade disasters can also strike with train derailments, pipeline breaches, community fires, or public safety and security incidents. Many of our communities could...

  • Spring cleaning and making a little money

    Jennifer Garbow|May 7, 2016

I believe spring has finally arrived in northwest Minnesota! If you are like me, than you feel the urge to clean everything that has accumulated dust over the long winter months and clear out areas of your home that have too many things (my closets are bursting at the seams). Last year when I began to spring clean, I managed to talk my kids into helping out. After they went through their rooms they asked me if I would have a rummage sale so that they could sell the things they didn’t need or want anymore. I reluctantly agreed, knowing that i...

When the weather was less than ideal they participated in two indoor meets and the remaining meets have been outdoors. The Rams spent most of the first three weeks practicing indoors, at the School or Rams Sports Center. On the boys side, there are many new faces in the Track program. There is a total of 40 boys on the varsity roster. Many newcomers...

  • Drier, warmer weather raises the threat of wildfires

    May 7, 2016

Recent Red Flag Warnings in parts of Minnesota, along with the extended weather forecast calling for dry and warmer temperatures, are important reminders of the potential threat of wildfires in Minnesota. “The cool, moist spring conditions are now behind us,” said Adam Munstenteiger, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources forestry supervisor in Warroad. “And while we see things partially greening up, a good amount of dead and dry material still remains on the ground.” With an upcoming dry and sunny weather forecast on the way, wildfir...

    Jeff Olsen|May 7, 2016

Dr. Matt Erickson is the new owner of the Family Chiropractic Center in Roseau, having taken over the business following his dad's retirement this past winter. They had worked together since 2008. Dr. Lew is now a snowbird. But there is a new team - Matt and his wife Bethany, a Nebraska gal who caught his attention some years back when the 1999 Roseau High School graduate was pursing his dream of a hockey scholarship while playing for the USHL Lincoln Stars in 2002. They smiled at his...

    Jeff Olsen|May 7, 2016

This July, Blake Skogstad, a senior this coming fall at RHS, will have the opportunity to represent Minnesota when he competes for the Central Conference Wrestling Team in Australia. As nothing is free in life, he needs to raise $7,500 to cover the round-trip flight as well as lodging and meals. "It's a great opportunity for my son to wrestle in international competition," said Kim Skogstad, noting that Blake is very serious about representing Minnesota and the USA. Already, he has begun...

  • The Men are swinging away at Oakcrest

    Jeff Olsen|May 7, 2016

Already, there are bragging rights in the 2016 Men's Golf League as Jared Strand and Andy Czeh had an eagle 3 on the par 5 18th hole to tie Mark Wilson and Donn Haugen in the best ball scramble with the low gross of 30. "Donny and I actually won because we got a stroke handicap and won the low net with a 29," said Wilson. "But we didn't win the most money, so let's brag up Strand and Czeh." Three teams tied for 3rd place honors with 31: Tim Erickson & Stacy Monkman, Byron Strand & Keith...

  • Perham deals baseball Rams a tough defeat

    Jeff Olsen|May 7, 2016

Here's how tough it was last Friday at Gilbertson Field in the top of the 7th with the Rams leading 7-4 in a section game against the Perham Yellowjackets. It was a hornets' nest. You'd rather have your girlfriend break up with you because it felt even worse than that. Perham did everything right and the Rams couldn't buy an out, lest ways not until the Yellowjackets scored 5 runs to retake the lead, 9-7. Yes, there were some Ram fielding errors by an ordinarily superb fielding team. But that...

  • Ram golfers make progress at Pebble Creek

    Jeff Olsen|May 7, 2016

Last weekend in the 2-day event in Fergus Falls, the boys golf team came out of the woods. "We did considerably better this weekend," coach Mike Lundbohm said on Sunday. They didn't walk off with the trophy, but they made some big strides. "We finished 5th out of 7," he said, with Detroit Lakes, Moorhead, and Crookston finishing in the top 3, followed by Fergus Falls, Roseau, and Thief River Falls. Junior Bryden Stoskopf saw his first action of the season and did not disappoint. "He shot 83/81...

  • Ram bats silenced in Crookston DH split

    Jeff Olsen|May 7, 2016

What a first game on Tuesday in Crookston as the Rams batted around in the 2nd and 4th innings, banging out 6 runs in the 2nd and 4 more in the 4th. If the Twins hit 'em like the Rams, they wouldn't be cellar dwellers. The Rams won convincingly on a 12-1 decision that went 6 innings. Leading the hit parade were Trevor McMillin with 3 hits and 3 RBIs and Adam Hedlund with 2 hits and 3 RBIs, followed by Paxton Pierce (2 hits & 2 RBIs), Logan Monsrud (1 hit & 2 RBIs), Nick Pavek (1 hit & 1 RBI), an...

  • Golfing Lads are 3rd in 19 team tourney

    Jeff Olsen|May 7, 2016

It was a perfect day to be flying a kite on Tuesday in Fosston and Bagley where the Rams battled the wind at two golf courses. But there were no complaints from coach Mike Lundbohm, whose players keep improving. "We were pretty happy with the results," he said, noting that only Crookston and Mahnomen placed ahead of his Rams. "We played 9 holes in Fosston and then we drove over to Bagley and played 9 holes at the Twin Pines course," he said, momentarily at a loss for the name of the Fosston cour...
