Ryan "Pete" Petersburg and Scott "Bon Bon" Baumgartner just might be the Outdoor Adventure Foundation's most unique twosome. Recently, they hosted a couple of sons and their dads who had a blast up at the Northwest Angle. They are a definite contrast - Pete in his wheelchair, a quadraplegic who still hunts and won't stay cooped up; and Bon Bon, a bear of a man with a knack for funny antics and finding walleyes. A year ago, they formed the Northwest Minnesota Outdoor Adventure Foundation, which...
by Paetyn Spilde, English 12, Mrs. Didrikson Imagine yourself in a place you never thought you would have the chance to be. Maybe it is in another world, or across the globe, or maybe just in your home state. What brought you to this place? What is so significant about it? Life takes us on a variety of adventures, some we pray to never experience again and others we wish for again and again. There is a place, a special place, that I was able to go. Unheard of by the public, but so very...

Every time I fly, I expect to die. Back in the mid-1960s, I'd head right to the nearest airport bar and down several strong drinks. Courage, my man! I felt braver half in the bag. Had I been a Baptist, I'd probably be in hell. Just recently, I offered to pay my present wife's fare to Norway after she was invited to fly over in May with her sister, Camille. Autumn turned it down. My wife prefers never to fly again because when the plane explodes in the air or crashes into the ocean, she will be...
The very top of this page is titled OPINION. For those of you that don't understand this page, an opinion is one persons view about something. Other people may or may not have the same opinion. That's the really cool thing, we are each entitled to our own OPINION. Now there is a difference between an opinion and JUDGEMENT. Judging someone is usually someone using harsh or critical views about something or someone. I will get back to this after I catch you up on how I started writing. Thanks Bro...
Not to say it has been a long winter, but, I now know all the Walton’s first names and also oldest to youngest and most of their friends and neighbors. The same holds true for the Ingalls, Garveys and Olsons from Little House on the Prairie. After spending thirty five winters working almost everyday all day outside in the woods, there will be no apology for enjoying a warm house with a very comfortable couch. A rule of thumb used to be you had til March 20 to get your wood hauled out. One year we had to move out the end of February and b...
Most residents of Roseau don’t know what our Principal and Athletic Director Ivan Hirst of the Roseau High School has been sending the students. He and his Assistant Principal Mrs. Johnson have been sending out attendance letters “informing” parents if their child has missed ten percent of school or more. I know many of these letters have gone out. And I am not the only parent that is upset about them. Not only that students have been called to the office and questioned about why they were gone. Many of these students are good students in the...
Have you ever heard someone say, "The only two things we can be sure of (and some people add, "in this life") are death and taxes?" Sometimes it's stated with a grin, especially as April 15th, "tax day" approaches. Are you smiling? Death and taxes. Neither word usually has a celebrating ring to it. I say usually, because there may be a possible exception, at least in relationship to death. I'll get into this later in the article. You might have expected that. What about taxes; anything good?...

SHORT STORIES AND TALL TALES I rummaged through stuff in the basement for my tackle box, a thing of dust and two-tone green plastic last seen hidden among odd tools and an assortment of spray cans on top of the refrigerator in the basement. I deftly removed the tackle box from the tall timber of spray cans. Blew the dust from it in a strong single breath and set it on the layout table nearby. I knew I had seen my ice fishing rod somewhere recently. It is a one foot handle of five-eighth inch wooden dowel with the sharp end of a headless nail pr...
