  • Joe's a blue-collar, working-class kid

    Jeff Olsen|Apr 13, 2019

by Jeff Olsen Joseph "Joe" VanDeHey, 18, has the look of an Army recruit, meaning he's got some rough spots, is in no way angelic, has been a frequent visitor to the principal's office, but he can outwork half of his classmates. And now, the Roseau High School senior is approaching the final stretch and is planning to graduate even if it's a long shot. "I plan to make it," he said earlier this week. Joe doesn't say much, but his uncle, Dean Housker, a long-distance trucker, is in his nephew's...

  • National Library Week

    Laurel Latham|Apr 13, 2019

by Laurel Latham Oh for a book and a shady nook, Either indoors or out, With the green leaves whispering overhead, or the street cries all about. Where I may read at all my ease, both of the new and old, For a jolly good book whereon to look Is better to me than gold. John Wilson There's a real warmth about the Roseau Public Library from the moment one enters; the welcoming smiles of Stacey, Kent, Dave and Shaleah truly happy to see a patron walk through the door, a homey red brick fireplace tha...

  • Representative Collin Peterson seems ok without a safe and effective U.S. southern border.

    Apr 13, 2019

Representative Collin Peterson voted against President Trump’s national emergency declaration at the border, a declaration that is aimed at preventing illegal crossings. Does Representative Peterson realize that there IS an emergency at the border? Does he realize he is supporting chaos and lawlessness, or does he just not care? Rep. Peterson and his Democrat Colleagues are not allowing our immigration process to be enforced, a process that the legislature initially put in place. There is a crisis at the border. More than 2,000 unvetted i...

  • Make America Great Again/Global Warming

    Apr 13, 2019

A lot of our birds of Spring are back. By how fast the geese in particular manage to have little ones, they must start nesting as soon as their feet hit the ground. Between hunting getting to be a rich mans game and way too many rules, their sheer numbers will get to be a problem. With very little grain laying in swathes with almost everything straight combined they don’t have the opportunity for destruction they had forty or so years ago. The sights and sounds of geese are always a big part of the changing of the seasons whether Spring or F...

  • CROSS WORDS

    Apr 13, 2019

In just a few days we will be remembering the two most significant events of Jesus' time on earth; two of the most significant and potentially life-changing events in the history of our world. We will be remembering and celebrating, if I may use this term worshipfully Jesus' crucifixion (designated,) "Good Friday" by the "Christian Church" and his resurrection (rising from the dead) three days later. Now I think it's important to keep in mind that Jesus' death on the Cross was not martyrdom for...

  • Making your exit in literary style!

    Jeff Olsen|Apr 13, 2019

Always, I read obituaries with a grain of salt. Mostly, it's that standard line in almost every obit: "Survived by loving wife (or devoted husband)." Why not the following? "We battled for years and I sort of began to like the old fart!" A local lady, now deceased, was close to death at LifeCare Medical Center when her sister, an elderly woman still very much alive and living in rural Roseau, tried to cheer her up by saying, "Just think, (name redacted)! You will be buried right next to (name...

  • If it is prom season, it is spring...Right?

    Jodi Wojciechowski|Apr 13, 2019

Prom season is here. This past weekend we traveled to see Brandon and Ariah in her prom. I have only been to the Roseau prom. I will say after attending at a different school, Roseau goes all out on prom in comparison. It was a fun evening and Brandon and Ariah looked spectacular! (I might be a little biased.) Brienne Miller, of Miller Formal, outdid herself again! Brandon's tux was amazing and fit him perfectly. Roseau High School prom will be at the end of the month on April 27. On Sunday,...

  • The water's still flowing under the bridge

    Apr 13, 2019

by Jeff Olsen For the small town of Roseau, which has seen its share of floods over the years, the most recent being the disastrous flood of June 2002 - and even a few years after that as dedicated sandbag brigades staved off the flood waters - Johnny Cash's hit song, Five Feet High and Rising doesn't inspire anyone to break out into a song and dance. They remember! Some even got around by boat, which was captured in the Cash lyrics: We can make it to the road in a homemade boat That's the only...
