by Jeff Olsen It's not in the works yet, but the mood is optimistic that the City of Roseau might be turning a big corner. "It's baby steps," said Mayor Jeff Pelowski following Monday's meeting, noting that the Roseau Public Library would begin curbside service starting on Thursday, April 30. "The council talked about the playgrounds, and we will keep those closed for another week," he said, adding that the city crew wasn't going to fence off the playgrounds, but there will be police tape.... by Jeff Olsen The Roseau County Board approved a LifeCare Public Health Service Contract on Tuesday. "Counties are required to provide public health, and LifeCare does that for us," said Commissioner Jack Swanson, adding that the board also approved a LifeCare Public Health Jail Service Contract, which provides nursing service at the Roseau County Detention Center. "This is done to try to reduce the cost of what is called prisoner medical expenses," said Swanson. "When somebody ends up in jail... Full story
by Jeff Olsen It was an unexpected swan song, much like an unsuspecting tough old goose getting blindsided by a semi. For Tracey Wensloff, this would have been his 20th and final season as Roseau's head baseball coach. "I'd like to believe that every year we had a chance to be competitive. Some years we had better talent than other years. This was the year I was hoping we'd make a run," he said, adding that his team got in seven days of practice before the curtain dropped. The school doors and...
by Jeff Olsen Tim Simmons, a 1981 RHS graduate and self-described mediocre athlete who never played varsity sports for the Roseau Rams, has come a long way. He's a mountain trekker, runs marathons, has traveled the world, and is bilingual. Credit María Goded for his foreign language skills. The 1985 Bemidji State University graduate in graphic design could be hunkering down somewhere in the States if it hadn't been for Sandy Flagstad's art classes at Roseau High School. "That's where I started b...
by Sawyer Ginther, English 7, Mrs. Didrikson It was my first year of hunting. I'd been practicing all summer with my bow and couldn't wait to go hunting for the first time. Finally the day came to hunt. When we got to deer camp, I still practiced every day for a couple of hours. That night I couldn't fall asleep because my mind was racing about the next day. When my dad woke me in the morning my heart was pumping. I felt really prepared and was confident in myself because I'd been practicing...
by Julie Elick People travel hundreds of miles to enjoy what we have "in our back yard". Lake of the Woods is a large, pristine body of water with many bays, islands, and a vast shoreline. Rated "world-class" for walleye, sauger, and trophy northern pike fishing. There have been a number of questions concerning both camping and the opening of our northland resorts. You can enjoy the outdoors while doing your part to slow the spread of COVID-19. Here are some guidelines you should observe...
submitted by Arlette Solom "Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up." Thomas A. Edison Director Thora Halvorson's statement: Due to the Coronavirus all activities have been cancelled or postponed for May. If things change so we don't have to stay at home then we will get everything scheduled again." Activities listed throughout this article are scheduled date and time when things go back to normal again. "Patience and tenacity are worth more than twice their weight of cleverness."...
On Monday morning, it was time to touch base with some characters who make this world interesting. Take Andy Kockelman, a 1988 Roseau High School graduate, whose late dad, Ron P. Kockelman, was the RHS principal. RPK was a stickler for rules, which meant that we occasionally clashed even if I was only a wrestling coach. I called Andy down in the Twin Cities, and he was at home. Where else would he be? He's an IT specialist and works out of his home all the time, not just during this coronavirus...
On my mind this week is how I am no longer going to take the 'little things' for granted anymore and how much I miss the 'normal' we used to have in our lives. This may sound dumb to a lot of people, but for those of you who know me, you know I always get my nails done. This actually started with my late sister-in-law Dyan. She convinced me that getting our nails done would be our little 'girl time'. I went along with it and after she passed away I have continued getting my nails done and not a...
What in the world is one of our political parties doing to our country? They threaten to put you in jail for going outside yet they release the ones already in jail. How many of our civil liberties guaranteed in the Constitution can they abuse before people just flat out say enough is enough. The Constitution and the Ten Commandments were not written on toilet paper. If people are practicing social distancing, then why do abortion clinics need to be an essential service? Maybe both parties involved should spend some time in jail. After all...
Julie and I are grateful daily for the "life words" being offered to all of us for dealing with the world-wide "invisible enemy" of the coronavirus. We take them seriously and are attempting to do two things: (1) Apply them for our own protection and the protection of others (we need each other) and (2) Model these words for others to encourage their participation. The thought of "life words" came to me earlier today when I opened my bible to Luke, chapter 5, verses 1-11. I'd like to invite you...

Last Sunday Joe and I, along with the Darrin Smedsmo family, went to visit Mr. Hulst's farm to pet a one day old baby cow. Isn't it great to live in Roseau County? Remember the song: "Old MacDonald had a farm.." etc. How about a Roseau version? Old MacHulst he had a farm. E-I-E-I-O. And on that farm he had a cow (200 actually) E-I-E-I-O. And one of these cows she had a calf E-I-E-I-O. With a baby moo here. And a baby moo there. Here a moo. There a moo. Everywhere a baby moo moo. Old MacHulst he...
Spring is welcoming with ditch banks greening up and the trees budding. The WELCA group here have been making quilts at home for missions— but just learned they won’t be able to send them this year. Sunday there was a big fire on some CRP land South of Salol. The fire jumped the grade where a man was burning his field. As a result the DNR brought lots of equipment out. There was no major damage. Betty and Roger Hulst should have an award for all the community outreach they do. They might just call you up asking if you want a pie or some sou... Full story
