  • Local Legend Loren Ballard was a Colorful Character

    Jeff Olsen|Jun 26, 2021

by Jeff Olsen Standing just inside Helgeson Funeral Chapel in Roseau a week ago Wednesday afternoon, Roseau County Chief Deputy Sheriff Tobi Eidsmoe was asked if he was the security detail. He smiled and said, "No." It was a wonderful cast of characters - at least one millionaire but mostly regular folks, one who looked like he had just arrived from the Klondike, another in an old sweaty cowboy hat that might have been stomped on by his horse, very few society dames, and an assortment of old...

  • Be Still and Know ..(Thank you Becky)

    Julie Elick|Jun 26, 2021

Being still is both a discipline and very difficult to do. For a person to be still, they have to feel safe, and confident. Becky Rosenkrans made me a bracelet. It is hand stamped in copper, and connected with rivets onto a leather band. It says BE STILL AND KNOW. It is taken from a verse, Psalm 46:10, which reads "Be still, and know that I am God." It isn't enough in a time of great stress to just be still, to just zone out using a mantra. The reason a mantra doesn't work is because stillness... Full story

  • "It's Not My Shift Yet!" That's What She Said.

    Pastor Joe Elick|Jun 26, 2021

I took out the trash on my way to this article. More about this shortly. It's good to be back with you again. I had to pass on having an article last week for a couple of reasons. Dealing with fatigue, and needing the energy to be with the Ballard family and conducting Loren's funeral service; an honor and a privilege. The Ballards have been good friends of Julie and I for over 30 years now. Our hearts and prayers continue to be extended to Marianne and family. Now on to the subject at hand.... Full story

  • God has to wonder what the hell is going on down here

    Jeff Olsen|Jun 26, 2021

Let's start on the light side. I was a student of Catholic schools for 12 years. Grade school and high school. It wasn't my choice. By the time I was in the second grade, I was sleeping with a crucifix under my pillow. For good luck. I wasn't taking any chances. The nuns seemed to be entirely focused on hell, and I was headed directly there. It was the shock of my life in 1950 to learn in the first grade that I was going to burn like charcoal and glow in the dark for eternity. What a bad deal....

  • Tubing/Camping in Red Lake Falls

    Jodi Wojciechowski|Jun 26, 2021

Kyle and I haven't gone camping together, even though adding air conditioning to our fish house would make the perfect camper too. One of the reasons is our fur baby Blu. Brandon watches him when Kyle and I have little excursions, but he usually goes camping with Sarah and Brian so that leaves us with Blu. This year we took the plunge and added air to the fish house and said yes to camping at Red Lake Falls and tubing. We figured we would try camping with Blu and see if it would work....
