  • They're walking works of fascinating skin art

    Jeff Olsen|Jun 29, 2019

by Jeff Olsen Forever, tattoos were the persona of sailors, soldiers and criminals - a rogues' art gallery of sailing ships, naked ladies, eagles, skulls, serpents, stilettos, and "Born to Raise Hell" inked across their upper torsos and other body parts. Now, tattoos are the norm. Richard Anderson, a Roseau barber, is a walking Picasso. "I have five tattoos total, and I don't want to know what they cost," he said and laughed. His most recent tattoo is the American flag that he got on February 25...

  • Warroad's Wayne Knutson Is A Working Wonder

    Jun 29, 2019

by Jeff Olsen These days, way past retirement age, Wayne Knutson ought to be kicking back and taking it easy. But on a recent Friday morning - precisely at 6:22 a.m. - he was waiting in his kitchen for an important phone call from Lake Country Chevrolet in Warroad where he has worked as a body repairman for 47 years. Old habits die slowly. "I'm waiting to get a call from Rod (Pearson) to see if I gotta go in or not," he said. Just the day before, Mike Kvarnlov, the former owner of Lake Country...

  • WRITE ON: Just Another Day on the Lake.

    Jun 29, 2019

by Kate Dahl, English 12, Mrs. Didrikson Saturday, December twenty-second, two thousand and eighteen. We had just arrived at our family Christmas, three days early so that we could all be there to celebrate. My cousin and I decided to take the ranger out and go spearfishing to waste some of our time, rather than sitting around waiting to be able to open presents. Spearing, is another type of ice fishing where you throw a long, sharp, metal rod at the fish instead of using a typical fishing rod....

  • THE OTHER SIDE: WHICH CHAPTER ARE YOU ON?

    Pastor Joe Elick|Jun 29, 2019

By: Pastor Joe Elick Recently our daughter, Londa, shared the following statement with me from a book she has been reading: "You can't start the next chapter of your life if you keep re-reading the last one." Can you relate to this in any way? I immediately thought about the apostle Paul, and I'll tell you why later in this article. I want to carefully and thoughtfully bring a statement that King David prayed in Psalm 139 after celebrating the wonder of God's intimate participation in the...

  • A different take on celebrating the Fourth

    Jeff Olsen|Jun 29, 2019

If only I had the money and the time, I'd book a Red Eye Flight next Wednesday to Washington, D.C., for the biggest Fourth of July bash in American history. I prefer to remember less gaudy displays of patriotism. Probably half of Roseau County wasn't alive when we had the Bicentennial Fourth of July Celebration in 1976 in these United States of America. President Gerald Ford didn't speak at the Lincoln Memorial that day. Instead, he went golfing and promptly beaned some hapless spectator. I...

  • Pastor Joe and Julie, Julie, Julie...

    Jodi Wojciechowski|Jun 29, 2019

The only thing on my mind is I get to have a five day break from the newspaper. We have an early deadline next week for the Fourth of July, which means we get a lot of days off! If you need to submit anything for next week's RTR the deadline is Monday. It can be at midnight, if you like. Technically as long as it is to me by 8 a.m. Tuesday, we will get it in the newspaper. If it is after 8 a.m. there is a chance it will go in but it isn't guaranteed. I wasn't quite sure what I could fit into...

  • Letters to the editor: Dogs and Liberals by Sheldon Larson

    Jun 29, 2019

For the last twenty two years we have been blessed with two of the best dogs to ever walk on this earth. We got Snoopy as a pup in the summer of ninety-seven. She was a quarter german shepard, a quarter great pyrenees, and half lab. She hunted woodchucks, raccoons and especially skunks with a passion. She was a constant companion and watch dog. More than that she was family. We shared our world together for eleven years. She was never spayed, but for some unknown reason only had puppies once. On December fourth of 2004, Lurch Leroy Larson w...

  • Mindset Coaching

    Jed Kobernusz|Jun 29, 2019

Going on a diet only implies one thing. Heck going on anything only implies one thing. It implies that eventually, you’ll go off of whatever you’re on. In today's world of instant gratification, we are faced with it every day. It's time to shed some light on what diets do to our minds as well as our bodies. There are too many programs, influencers and hoaxes out there trying to get your attention and money. All I want is your honesty and to increase your awareness. When you think about going on a diet, that's what happens, you think that it...
