by Jeff Olsen Yes, they are a recently recognized state and county farm family, but consider this. She's a city girl who took to farming like she was born for the farm life and handled the swathing and trucking chores to make Byfuglien Trucking sit up and take notice. One thing is for sure, Earl took notice of this pretty gal, now a young octogenarian who grew up within the Roseau city limits. Credit Earl with excellent eyesight. Just recently, he singled out Carol for their great partnership...
Students in Mrs. Laugen’s class had the opportunity to work with hip hop artist and a spoken word poet. The residency was arranged with COMPAS and sponsored by the Roseau Parent Teacher Organization. Avery Olson English 7 Roseau Community School It can be a little daunting to begin an adventure with a five and a half hour bus ride. That feeling is even greater for those of us who love the comforts of home. The first hour or so was pretty quiet after boarding. Most girls fell asleep right away, since we had to wake up around five in the m...
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you; I do not give it to you as the world does. Do not let your hearts be distressed or lacking in courage. (John 14:27) Two painters each painted a picture to illustrate his conception of rest. The first chose for his scene a still, lone lake among the far-off mountains. The second threw on his canvas a thundering waterfall, with a fragile birch tree bending over the foam; and at the fork of the branch, almost wet with the cataract's spray, sat a... Full story
Is there anything we can count on? Even if life goes upside down, the disappointments, which we all have had our share, are on the way. I am not starting with a negative note. It is just a platform we all live on. The title of this column says it all from the negative side. My answer to it is, "That all depends upon your belief structure. If you've got room for God in it, YOU CAN COUNT ON HIM! Belief in God can help us to go the distance in life. When everything in our world seems to be going...
Beautiful! The other day, I said to the wife, "Let's live a little and get a motel room in Bemidji, take in a movie and eat well and enjoy the air conditioning." We picked the date. Our grandson, Derek, even looked for the best deal. Damn, the rooms were around 200 bucks even at some of the worst dives in Bemidji where you might get mugged in the parking lot. "What's going on down there, Derek? It's a Monday night!" Just our luck. For that entire week, Bemidji is the host city for the 2024 Unicy...
I woke up Wednesday morning and there was a blood clot hanging AGAIN! This time it wasn't as big and I did get it removed with one swipe. Yes, I did sleep, if you call it sleep, with the gauze in my mouth and it was DISGUSTING. I woke up many times and gagged several, as well. I did survive. I wasn't happy when it was still bleeding, but it had slowed down a lot. Finally by Wednesday afternoon the bleeding stopped and I was GAUZE FREE! It was a huge relief. There wasn't a lot of pain through t...
Deer can be mean. I didn't know that. One of our dogs (blessed with the name of Tucker Carlson) went into the woods and some kind of faint cry made it to my ears. Turned out Tucker had gotten into where a baby deer was hanging out. Mom didn't like that and proceeded to chase after him around and around the house while I was standing in the middle amazed at the mama deer with hooves all out going after a dog and not caring I was there. As I was relating the story to a friend at church he shared w...
Our world has remembered how to rain. Now the number one question is does it remember how to stop? It has been said that it doesn’t hurt to complain but it doesn’t help either. People and pets distance themselves from whiners. The dandelions seem to have did what they had to do and have slowed way down. I tried to figure out how to put a camera under the mower deck to see if they really do duck when the mower goes over them. No luck. Nature’s babies of all kinds are showing up more and more. The fox pups now are weaned and looking for an easy...
Greetings everyone! For those of you who may not know me, let me introduce myself. My name is Dave Peterson and I am the pastor of NorthLand Assembly in Badger. I began writing Beyond Brokenness back in 2016 and was a steady contributor here until about 2018. Recently I have been asked by a few folks to bring the column back, so here I am. I am going to jump right into the deep end and share something I have been meditating on for the last few weeks. As we exit June and begin July, I want to talk about something I noticed during PRIDE month....

"I could eat five tons of these," my granddaughter Addison boasted. "They are so good." I challenged her claim. "Five tons is a lot. Are you sure you could eat that many?" She grabbed a few more. "Over twenty-one days," Addison said nonchalantly. Then she smiled and walked away, returning to the container a few minutes later. What could be so delicious? Pie chips. Now, you may not remember them as pie chips, which is a name I gave them, but I'll bet you've had them before. Maybe your mom or... Full story
