On Monday afternoon, Julie Pahlen, the Director for Public Health at LifeCare Medical Center and Roseau County, was reached by phone at her office in LifeCare Medical Center. She is the point person during this pandemic and provided a breakdown of COVID-19 cases in Roseau County to date. "As of this morning, we've had 29 confirmed cases with the number still growing. We know we had more positives today also," she said, noting that the number is going to grow. Of those 29, according to Pahlen,...
Andy and Rachel Przekwas didn't take top honors at the Minnesota Trail Tournament on Lake of the Woods near the Rainy River a week ago Friday, July 10. But they had no complaints. Andy was manning a fishing pole while still in diapers as his old man, Gary, now a grandpa, lives by the adage that "If you ain't sucking your thumb, grab a pole and catch a fish!" There was no way, Andy, now in his thirties, was going to marry some society dame who couldn't fish and hunt. The former Rachel Dahl is def...
A week ago Friday, Alex Halstensgard, a 2014 Roseau High School graduate, made a stunning announcement after being contacted on the status of Oakcrest Golf Course under his direction as the superintendent of the grounds crew. "I'm going ask my girlfriend to be my wife tonight, and I'm going to do it at the golf course," he said. Is it a nice ring? "I think so. Hopefully, Ericka likes it." Aren't diamonds a girl's best friend, or so the saying goes? Ericka Beito, also 24, is an engineer at...
by Julia Braaten , College English 12, Mrs. Didrikson Sweet, sweet summertime. When the sun shines from early in the morning to late at night. The terrible blood sucking insects are back, causing my legs to fill with unwanted scars. I am itchy from the small patches of poison ivy that are located throughout my body. But boy, oh boy, do I love this time of year. I love it because it is the most freeing time of the year; where I can spend all day outside soaking up the sun and all night watching...
Do you ever reflect on your past week? I have. Sometimes hindsight is better than foresight! Whether it was a thing said or done it all comes down to a trade. Do I say what is on my mind or do I keep my mouth shut? What are the stakes? Will you enable bad behavior because you decided to take down all your boundaries? Boundaries are important in healthy relationships. Your NO is a very important word. Your YES is a much easier word to say. My noes and yeses are not locked in cement. Grace,...
Leadership is leading by example. It's like an infantry captain leading the charge when the odds are damn poor and, Sweet Jesus, where the hell is the artillery? That's leadership! And here was Trump, the President of the United States and especially Roseau County, who had steadfastly refused to wear a mask for more than four months and has continually made wearing masks a political issue. Since when is being smart a political issue? It became one because, possibly, the liberals are more apt to...
The Roseau County Fair has been on my mind along with all the food trucks I'm missing this year with no fair. Kyle introduced me to funnel cakes at the fair and I sure want to have one again! It was delicious and I need to have one now. (Or this weekend will work too.) I googled and found a recipe for County Fair Funnel Cakes so guess what I will be trying to make this weekend! Yep, some fair deliciousness! I was able to watch the kids have fun lighting off a few fireworks. I guess the saying...

After losing race dates in May and all of June due to Covid-19, and Mother Nature rearing her ugly head for the 4th of July opener, The Greenbush Race Park was finally able to turn some laps under green flag conditions. Dustin Strand of East Grand Forks, doesn't make it to the Park that often, but when he does he's a good bet to park it in the winner's circle at the end of the night, and he did just that in the Modified feature. Strand led all 20 laps, but it wasn't easy as Dustin Wahl of Greenbush, was nipping at his back bumper the entire...

by Donn Haugen Well, here ends the first half of the Oakcrest Men’s League. Hard to believe it goes by so fast. This week out front, Mark Wilson, Ben Johnson and Jared Strand brought out all the stops, with some awesome midseason form. All three shooting 35 out front for a three way tie for Low Gross. Ben Johnson (aka Hero) takes home Low Net with a 33. Bryan Lundbohm set one closest to the pin on hole #7. With some pin point accuracy. Mark Wilson had longest putt on #9 with a 12’ left to right sidewinder! Out back we had another three way tie...

I never know what may get my creative writing juices flowing. On Thursday evening, July 9th, Roseau welcomed a delightful young lady from Karlstad by the name of Dariann Leigh. She had been invited to take the stage at our beautiful Gazebo Park for a concert. Her music of choice is country-western. She celebrated our presence; I hope she felt that we returned the honor. A couple of things stirred my imagination that night. First of all, her positive sharing about her family. She shared about...
Elizabeth and Chris Poyzer and girls headed back to Florida from visiting at Dayton and Mary Grafstrom’s. Larry and Marvel Monkman visited at Diane and Dennis Monkmans and showed the pictures Larry had of the big bear getting into the garbage and checking out the raspberries. Several mornings Tom Grafstrom joined Dayton, Samuel and me visiting over coffee on my patio. Jerry and Katherine Vertina had coffee and a great visit with Ray and Pat Roth in their garage. Philip and Loralie Haywood, from Brooklyn Park and Mike and Kelly Roth were also t...
