  • This 'Old Girl' is an ageless wonder

    Jeff Olsen|Jul 20, 2024

by Jeff Olsen At age 80, Jean Pederson is much more than the 2024 Roseau County Outstanding Senior Citizen Volunteer. Putting a label on this versatile senior citizen is like trying to lasso a comet. "She's unbelievable," said Carmen Przekwas, who's observed "Mean Jean" for over half a century. If bowling pins could talk, they'd say she throws a wicked ball. "She's been a member of the United States Bowling Congress for 60 years," said Przekwas while highlighting Jean's many accomplishments and...

  • All's well that ends well for this fishing couple

    Jeff Olsen|Jul 20, 2024

by Jeff Olsen Andy and Rachel Przekwas have seen much better days on Lake of the Woods competing in tournaments. During the Woods Walleye Tournament on Saturday, July 13, in Warroad, Andy was having more bad luck than having the IRS requesting his presence and to be sure to pack a toothbrush. It was a lousy morning and never mind that the entry fee was $250 and Andy has a reputation for being in the money even when the top pros are having a field day. "The weather was so hot and the fishing was...

  • New Beginnings

    Julie Elick|Jul 20, 2024

I am gearing up for the fair. Londa and I have two booths which we will share. Paintings, drawings, and jewelry, that pretty much says it all. I also have some books, in which I tore out the pages. Using strips of wood, I turned each book into a box. These boxes have a Scandinavian design, with little Nordic treasures. Sweden is also represented of which I am half. Half Norwegian and half Swedish. It is fun to try to find little treasures to put in these boxes and then decorate them. I found... Full story

  • Our God Is The God Of The Everyday

    Pastor Joe 1940-2021|Jul 20, 2024

God chooses to dwell with His people. He is not encased in a room or building, where you go to visit him. He is not a statue nor does he live in a fountain where you throw pennies. (Colossians 2:9) says of Jesus, "Who was all of God in a human body, and that He, "Became flesh and made his dwelling among us" (John 1:14). What a tremendous realization, Jesus has come to dwell among us. This coming week draws the dividing line between summer and winter. That's right, the Roseau County Fair. The...

  • Squeaky Seats

    Tom Palen|Jul 20, 2024

I stopped at McDonald's for a cup of coffee. I sat on the end of the long bench seat, a continuous bench that runs along a wall with several individual tables in front of it. A man standing in line waiting for his meal wore a T-shirt bearing the famous green and blue Seattle Seahawks logo. But his bird wore a sombrero, and the caption read "Si-Hawks." Finding it quite humorous, I commented on the shirt. I told him I was a die-hard Broncos fan, then asked, "Why is it that when the Seahawks were...

  • With the Mat Rats At the Muni!

    Jeff Olsen|Jul 20, 2024

On a recent July Monday, I was in the Muni over in Ranier, just a few miles east of International Falls. I arrived with some 2024 Mat Rat T-shirts, compliments of Mark "Hult" Hultgren, who is always remarkably generous. There was one young couple grinning when handed their free shirts. They held up a beer in salute. The Muni is as fine a joint as I've ever been in. The only thing missing, I mentioned to the bartender, was there weren't peanut shells on the floor. But the popcorn was free. I've b...

  • 4th of July Weekend

    Jodi Wojciechowski|Jul 20, 2024

The RTR was done in a day and a half and we were able to have a long weekend! Sarah, Bri, Kyle and me went to GF to purchase a few fireworks Wednesday after work. We went to Warroad on Thursday and checked out the food trucks and watched the Warroad parade. It was a great parade and the food was delicious. B and Lorena came Thursday evening along with two of her brothers. Friday her mom and her two younger brothers arrived and we grilled. The two lil boys brought me flowers, too! Then, we had a...

  • Shame on Them

    Ryan Honl|Jul 20, 2024

"Most importantly, and I mean this from the bottom of my heart, Trump is a threat to this nation." Joe Biden this month. "We're done talking about the debate. It's time to put Trump in the bullseye." Joe Biden this month. When a President says things like that along with other Democrats calling a political rival Hitler and a threat to democracy what could possibly happen? Well, we found out this week what an unstable donor to a Democrat political action committee called ActBlue will do. Plan A:...

  • Close Call

    Sheldon Larson|Jul 20, 2024

After pulling weeds in the garden yesterday and seeing how dry it was, it was nice to mute everything and just listen to a gentle rain. Retirement from farming is one of the few good moves this old farmer has made. With the numbers agribusiness people have to deal with in today’s world, the stress level is not missed at all. No matter how beautiful the crop or field so far not even once have I wished it was mine. The crops are looking good enough so the Bill Gates crowd won’t make us eat bugs for a little while. Much like falling off a tall bui...

  • Beyond Brokenness

    Pastor Dave Peterson|Jul 20, 2024

So Roseau, what do you want to talk about……? Well let me get this started. You see it has been my experience that the majority of our life is guided by and filled with QUESTIONS. I even started this musing with a question. Who, what, when, where, and why, fill in the blank. Five simple words but each can carry so much weight, from the mundane, “Where do I go eat” to the uber-important “who do I marry.” Roseau, let’s talk about a guy known for questions. In the Gospel of John, Jesus talks about preparing a place for us and that where He goes, we...
