  • Community Garden Has Multiple Benefits

    Laurel Latham|Jul 21, 2018

"Even in rural America, gardening is becoming a lost art," said Kristina Kaml, Health & Nutrition Programs SNAP-ED educator, University of Minnesota Extension, Roseau. "Minnesota is trying to change that through programs like SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) and SHIP (Statewide Health Improvement Partnership), through education. Every $1 spent on nutrition education, saves as much as $10 in long term health care costs. I'm very excited about Roseau's Community Garden! There's...

  • She's Out of jail for good

    Jeff Olsen|Jul 21, 2018

Sharon Hetteen has spent almost as much time inside a jail as on the outside over the past four decades. Still, she never had to run a tin cup across the bars and yell, "I want out of this joint!" In fact, she has a spotless record and served as a full-time jailer/dispatcher since 1984. She retired on Wednesday, July 11, at a big shindig at the Roseau County Courthouse. Oh, there are a couple of other things - she doesn't wear brass knuckles and she smiles frequently. Ms. Hetteen, a 1976 Roseau...

  • With Big Nick, who always makes good copy

    Jeff Olsen|Jul 21, 2018

On Monday, I stepped into a local bar that I had developed a liking for five decades ago when I was younger. It was the early 1970s and the place had a great cast of characters, the best being J.C. Stone, a Boston chap who ended up here some years after World War II. He added a real touch of class to these backwoods Swedes. When he owned the joint, it was Stoney's Bar, and Mr. Stone operated it until he got elected the Roseau County Treasurer in a landslide. Hell, he couldn't miss. Everybody...

  • Ultimate Issues (The Lady on the Bench)

    Pastor Joe|Jul 21, 2018

Ultimate! That’s kind of a big word. Sorta! I don’t like using big words when I write or speak because I might miss somebody. Well, there are a few exceptions. Like when I make up a word just for the fun of it. Like the word, “splendtaculous” in last week’s article. I had an English teacher one time who pointed out that when you’re reading a book and come across a word you don’t know the meaning of, you’re creating a “blank spot” on the page. “Look it up!” Now I don’t want to create any blank spots in your mind with the word, “ultimate” so I...

  • A night of close finishes at Greenbush Race Park

    Keith Cumming|Jul 21, 2018

The temps were hot and the racing was even hotter at the Greenbush Race Park as 63 cars signed in at the pit gate for the nights racing action. Only eight cars took the green flag for the Street feature, and Doug Van Mill of Bagley, would lead them to the green. Van Mill would use his number one starting spot to take the early lead. From his sixth place starting spot, Chase Boen of Karlstad, quickly worked his way to the front, and on lap six passed Van Mill in corner two for the lead. A caution two laps later put everybody on the bumper of...
