  • Her job is preparing for the next disaster!

    Jeff Olsen|Jul 23, 2018

Sue Grafstrom sat in her small office at the Roseau County Courthouse a week ago where she is one of 87 Homeland Security and Emergency Management directors in the state - one for each county in Minnesota. Grafstrom won't have to worry about a Hurricane Katrina or a Mount St. Helens happening here. Credit the geography for that. Nonetheless, Sue is a quick study on what could possibly go wrong. Since she was hired in April 2017 as the Roseau County Homeland Security and Emergency Management...

  • County Auditor Wants a Word With Voters

    Jeff Olsen|Jul 23, 2018

Times have changed. Once, voting at the old schoolhouse was the social event of the season in most rural townships. Some of the old bachelors even took a bath for the big event of voting. Now the old polling places are as rare as telephone booths. Roseau County Auditor Martie Monsrud recently added nine more townships to the list of mail-ballot precincts. "We have a flyer for mail-ballot voters. If you live in a mail-ballot precinct, you will be mailed your ballot instead of going to a polling...

  • Workout of the Week

    Jed Kobernusz|Jul 23, 2018

Whether you can or can’t you are right either way. Our minds get the best of us sometimes and we don't even realize it. Becoming familiar with what kind of self-talk you have is something I work on with everyone around me. Sometimes people get it right away and sometimes they don't. It tears me up every time I hear someone talk to themselves and they refer to themselves as a dummy or idiot. Or even worse they say they can't do something when in all reality they can, they just aren't seeing that they are in their own way. When you talk, your s...

  • Men's golf league teams chase the best

    Jeff Olsen|Jul 23, 2018

At Oakcrest Golf Course on Wednesday, the Peace Grenades, the two-time defending champs, are leading in the first half of the season. They're the team to beat, according to "The Commissioner" - Mark Wilson, the local CPA who knows numbers like a card shark knows easy marks. Meet the Peace Grenades: Nick Herling, Scott Turnow, Josh Sunsdahl, Brad Zoeller, Keith Vatnsdal and Jason Guy. "With backhanded napkin math, they're up 14 going into next week," said Wilson, explaining that next Wednesday wr...

  • Mother Nature gets second win at Greenbush Race Park

    Keith Cumming|Jul 23, 2018

A cloudy overcast day had Greenbush Race Park officials hoping that the rain would hold off long enough for them to get the racing program in. But two laps into the first heat a light rain started forcing the cars to the pits, and about 30 minutes later that persistant light rain forced promoter Jaime Sovde to cancel the nights racing program. Up next for the fastest 1/4 mile track in Northwestern Minnesota will be the first visit of the year for the NLRA Late Models and the Jack Grahn Memorial. The "Dugan" Nelson Memorial for the Midwest...

  • Canadian bacon won't be on the White House menu

    Jeff Olsen|Jul 23, 2018

I should have called Representative Dan Fabian, our fine Republican state legislator, last Thursday morning when I spotted the following headline in Newsweek.com: Trump White House Announces Job Fair Seeking 'Most Competent Conservatives' As Top Officials May Be Planning Exit According to the piece, there has been a heavy turnover throughout the Trump administration, and the conservative Heritage Foundation would host the event at the Dirksen Senate Office Building last Friday. Fabian and I coul...

  • If you were arrested for being a Christian...

    Pastor Joe|Jul 23, 2018

“If you were arrested for being a Christian...” “Yeah,” you may be saying, “go on. Get to the point!” I will, but first I must frame this article for those of you who don’t live in Roseau and receive these articles on Facebook. They are also printed in the Roseau Times-Region each week. Thank you Jodi, for giving me a place in the paper! I share a page each week with Jeff “Bro” Olsen who writes a column titled, “Never Neutral.” And he never is. Jeff and I have been friends for a long time, but we disagree on many things: especially on the sub...

  • This and That

    Jul 23, 2018

To the Editor, I started cutting hay yesterday. For the last few years the number of ravens that show up for an easy meal has kept getting bigger. The field I was cutting gets cut in two parcels, one is fifty acres and the other about four. I made a few rounds on the big one and decided to cut the small one. When almost done with the small one a sharptail hen with a clutch of chicks showed up. I stopped the tractor and tried to shoo them into the brush line that was about twenty-five yards a way. They hid under the swathes and in the strip left...
