"We had good attendance at the Roseau County Fair this year," said Richard Magnusson, Roseau County Fair Board Secretary. "Attendance is always based on the weather and the weather cooperated this year. Late Thursday night the sky got pretty dark but the bad weather managed to hold off." The Roseau County Fair Board has fifteen very hard working members who spend a great deal of time making sure the Fair runs smoothly. "Our two maintenance guys begin working on the fairgrounds mid-May,"...

Her favorite part of the job is educating everyone on the...

  • Trucinski and Lane get big paydays at GRP

    Keith Cumming|Jul 28, 2018

A much cooler night greeted racers and fans as the second half of the racing season kicked off with the Chad Olson Memorial for the Lightning Sprints and a special for the Pure Stocks here at the Greenbush Race Park. Mike Tiani of Middle River, would lead the 12 car Modified feature to the green, and looked like the car to beat as the car looked like it was on a rail. A couple of laps in Tiani would have to hold off Halma, driver Jordan Duray. This battle went on for about eight laps, Duray would get along side of Tiani on the straights, but Ti...

  • Chandler Mooney Earns Greco All-American Wrestling Honors

    Jeff Olsen|Jul 28, 2018

At the FargoDome a week ago Thursday and Friday, Chandler Mooney, who will be a Roseau High School senior this fall, wrestled seven matches to earn fourth place honors in the Junior Greco-Roman Division while competing for Team Minnesota at 145 pounds. Greco, as it is commonly called, is a style of wrestling that involves upper body moves and includes launching an opponent to his back from the standing position. This is right up Chandler's alley since he has great upper body strength. His first...

  • Jeremy Byfuglien shines in Men's League

    Jeff Olsen|Jul 28, 2018

On Wednesday evening at the Oakcrest Golf Course in Roseau, Jeremy "Buff" Byfuglien, the original Buff, came charging into the winner's circle as he and Kurt Weston tied for low net honors of 29 on the back nine. Weston was a double winner as he notched low gross honors with a 34 to lead the high handicappers on the back nine. Brian Hexum came the closest to the pin on the 10th green to earn his sleeve of three golf balls. Earning kudos on the 18th green was Scott "Lucky" Erickson, who sank the...

  • A tip of the hat to some special people

    Jeff Olsen|Jul 28, 2018

My old man, F.R. "Bob" Olsen, now dead a half century, had any number of dislikes - mostly women drivers and snoopy elderly neighborhood dames, all of whom he called "old battleaxes." Well, I like old women who have colorful stories, take a shot of brandy in their morning coffee or their orange juice, take an occasional pinch of snus, and give me hell when I have it coming. It's funny about young people. They don't think they'll ever get old and when they see old people barely able to walk,...

  • OUR CONCEPTION OF CONCEPTION...

    Pastor Joe|Jul 28, 2018

“You made all the delicate inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb.” That’s what David said to God, as recorded in Psalm 139:13 (NLT). More of this shortly. What is your conception, that is your understanding, of conception. A sperm and an egg getting together in a woman’s womb? It’s a crucial question in our society today. It has life and death implications. Yes. I’m talking about abortion which is building up momentum in the media again over the next Supreme Court nominees. Is there a “Supremer Court” than the...

  • Proud to be an American!

    Jul 28, 2018

To the Editor, The fair has come and gone one more time. It is starting to look, feel, and smell like fall. Almost everyone I talked to said it was way on the dry side, but remembering past years almost said it in a whisper and didn’t really dare wish for rain. It takes a long time to get really dry and only minutes to get really wet. If happiness is a large gut pile I was definitely not the only happy person there. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out why our healthcare system is so busy and also one of our nations biggest bus...

  • Oh the news!

    Jul 28, 2018

To the Editor, This past weekend, I had the honor and privilege to watch four local area teams of young men compete in the 2018 Northwest North Pod American Legion Baseball Tournament held in Warroad. Before each game, the teams recited the American Legion Baseball CODE OF SPORTSMANSHIP. It states “I Will: Keep the rules, Keep faith with my teammates, Keep my temper, Keep myself fit, Keep a stout heart in defeat, Keep my pride under control in victory, Keep a sound soul, a clean mind, and a healthy body.” After the reciting of this pledge, the...

  • Meet the new RHS Assistant Principal

    Jeff Olsen|Jul 28, 2018

Youth must be served, which should be the motto of Kelsey Johnson, the new Roseau High School Assistant Principal and Community Education Director. A young lady herself, she will wear two hats this coming fall after having taught elementary students for seven years in Thief River Falls and then last year at Lincoln High School in TRF as the Technology Integration Specialist. Johnson is brimming with enthusiasm about her new responsibilities. Recently, the Crookston native spoke by cellphone...

  • Racing Pigs Love Oreo Cookies

    Laurel Latham|Jul 28, 2018

"Three years ago we opened for Tim McGraw's outdoor concert in Nashville along with Twiggy the water skiing squirrel, a dog show and magic act," said Gary Dauer. " We have been to fairs, festivals and events as far away as San Antonio. Our pigs travel in an air conditioned trailer to keep them comfortable." Gary and Glenda Dauer were visiting family in Bear Creek, Montana when they attended their first pig race at a local bar. "Bear Creek is the middle of nowhere, yet a lot of people showed up...
