In order for Badger, Greenbush, Roseau, and Warroad school districts to go back to in-person learning on September 8, Roseau County must have less than 10 new cases of the coronavirus per 10,000 residents over a 14-day period. This is the set-up under the "Learning Model Parameters" of the "Safe Learning Plan." Gov. Walz on Thursday afternoon detailed how the "Safe Learning Plan" for Minnesota school districts will operate during the pandemic, which saw all schools conduct distance learning...
On Monday at Citizens State Bank, President Robert J. Foley, the son of Banker Bob, didn't require a script or teleprompter to know which particular businesses are on the edge. In 2002 following the Roseau flood, Banker Bob, then in his seventies, went from business to business, some of them with massive clean-up and renovation projects, and convinced the majority of the owners to never give up. This pandemic isn't a flood, but it knocked some businesses for a financial loop. Some lucky...
Staci Howell, owner at Annie's Trading Post in Roseau, is excited to add an additional business venture to the community of Warroad. They will be able to experience some of the great services Annie's Trading Post offers at their new Annie's Outlet located at 317 Lake Street Warroad. It all started with a phone call said Staci, "I received a call about a building for rent in Warroad and they inquired to see if Annie's would consider adding a store in their community." She continued, "We have a...
Tis the season to be bitten by the political bug. On the August Minnesota Primary ballot, four parties are fielding candidates for federal and/or state offices. Along with the Democrat and Republican parties, there are two other parties in the running - the Legal Marijuana Now Party and the Grassroots - Legalize Cannabis Party. The Grassroots-Legalize Cannabis Party has two individuals contesting for U.S. Representative District 7 - Rae Hart Anderson and Kevin "NeSe" Shores while five...
by Nikki Alaras, College English 12, Mrs. Didrikson "Every meet and every race is another chance to break the record."This is what ran through my mind as I left the school to ride the bus for "Windy Warren" where every race is not the same. Each race has it's own technique and it's distances, but they all give everyone an anxious and dreadful feeling. For me it is different, because my race, the 100-meter hurdles, goes beyond my fear and the struggle. This burning passion to beat the school...
In 2002 my friend Lavonne Johnson and I took a trip to Norway, and what are the odds? My old relative on the Wingness side named Mickel Vigdnes had a birthday on March 4th the same day that we flew out of Minneapolis. That just doesn't happen. Especially when I didn't even know who Mickel Vigdnes was. He came to the United States with the name Vigdnes, a registered Norwegian name to this day. Vig must have sounded like Wing in Norwegian. Fifteen generations of ancestry found by Neal Johnson, my...

Another beautiful night at Oakcrest Golf Course. This week I would like to give a shout out to the City of Roseau for taking care of those Minnesota State Birds, aka the mosquitos. Golf on this past Wednesday didn’t disappoint. Out front Jared Strand was on the board again with Low Gross, a smooth 34, 2 under par. Kurt Weston and AJ Erickson had a real battle out front and both come in with taking Low Net honors. Scoring 31 net. It was a battle for the ages and a real back and forth match. Derian Byfuglien took closest to the pin on hole #7. H...

Oh my! Who would have thought that a number of Congressional Republicans would be attacking Representative Liz Cheney, Dick's daughter and now the House Republican Conference Chair that she had been disloyal to President Donald Trump. What? Is there a required loyalty oath to this particular president? This weekend, the Associated Press reported: The lawmakers called out Cheney for her support of Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease expert, and for supporting a primary...
I guess it was our week to have the Roseau Police Department hang out at the Roseau Times-Region. Our first incident was when the Roseau County Landowners Coalition parked a 50-foot trailer in our parking lot to spread the word about a project that would devastate their productive family farmlands for no real benefit. Chief Ward Anderson was sent over to have them move it. He explained how there is an ordinance and you need a variance to park within the city limits. He was very nice about the...
Here is a letter by an unknown author that is just too good not to pass on. The Rowboat Comes For You… This may be the best and most honest political promotion statement you will ever read. It decidedly does not brush objections aside. You hate Biden? Read it. You hate Trump? Read it. You think there is no choice? Read it. And, read it with your grown up hat on. We have all been dealt huge responsibility with this election. The first step toward accepting responsibility is accepting it, and the first step toward accepting it is recognizing i...

Warroad- Lee Marvin Holter was an enthusiastic traveler, a lover of the outdoors, and a movie connoisseur. More importantly to Lee, though, he was a father to three beautiful daughters and three grandchildren. Lee suffered a fatal heart attack Sunday, July 26, 2020 at home. He was 50 years old. Lee was born on May 1, 1970, in Warroad, to father Marvin Holter and mother Linda (Palm) Holter. He lived much of his life in the Warroad area. Most recently, Lee made his home in Swift and his career at...
Roseau- Glenda Lucielle Phillips passed away at home surrounded by family on Monday, July 27, 2020 at the age of 59. Glenda was born in International Falls, on August 3, 1960 to Kermit and Lucielle (Lewis) Qualley. She grew up in International Falls, attending school there and graduating from Falls High School. Glenda worked at Bridgeman's Creamery for 14 years, then at the Holiday Inn until the family moved to Salol, in 1994. She went to work at Polaris Industries, retiring from there in April...
It’s blueberry picking time. Funny how those berries grow so beautifully without human care. No one needs to weed or water and they just wait in the woods for us to fill our pails! The Moreys went on a camping trip to Shevlin on the weekend. During the first night they had to move to a church yard as 70 mph winds were forecasted. The next night they were awakened by more wind and rain. It rained 3.5 inches but they did enjoy themselves anyway and Cayden got to do lots of fishing. We had windy nights here with pruned branches scattered but o...
Welcome to another week and another foray into the realm of brokenness. It is my sincere prayer that this will be a blessing for you and that you will be able to find healing from whatever has left you broken. Let me start this with a question. Have you ever been in a situation where you felt like you were going in the right direction only to be blindsided? You know the situation I am talking about, the one where you take two steps forward only to find yourself falling back one. It seems like I end up doing that more often than not. Let me...
The Saturday, July 11 edition of the Roseau Times-Region includes a front-page article about Kate Lundquist and her family entitled, “Roseau Mom Advocates For All Her Children.” The article contains several statements that are untrue. I’d like to fill in some information gaps and provide the truth. To simplify matters, let me be clear that the unnamed “interim pastor of a local church they had attended” is a reference to me and First Baptist Church Roseau (FBC). Here’s some background that may be helpful: While continuing to work full-time in W...
I hope you have or will read Rod Eastman’s Letter to the Editor: “Truth Matters.” I’m not going to go over again what Rod has already written. Instead I want to raise up and deal with the greater issue: Getting the facts before you “drop the axe.” This may not always be easy, but it’s worth the work; especially when someone’s reputation is on the line. Failure to “check things out” can create all kinds of problems for all kinds of people. Kate Lundquist says that this is what she did in relationship to the George Floyd ruckus (racial expl...

The Roseau County Landowners Coalition parked two 50-foot trailers in Roseau to spread the word about a project that would devastate their productive family farmlands for no real benefit. At over 50 farmers and landowners strong, the Coalition is launching a campaign in collaboration with the Institute for Justice (IJ), a national nonprofit dedicated to stopping the misuse of eminent domain. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the Roseau River Watershed District are demanding that...
For just $2, you could be the next mayor of the City of Roseau. To pass Go, you must file upstairs in the Roseau City Clerk's Office at the Roseau City Center. Earlier this week, City Clerk Beth Carlson explained the procedure, which requires filling out an Affidavit of Candidacy, a one-page form. All candidates must be at least 21 years of age, be eligible to vote, have not filed for the same or any other office in the upcoming primary or general election, and have been a resident of the City...
