by Jeff Olsen Late last week, Terry Stoe was spotted pushing a grocery cart down the bread aisle at SuperOne in Roseau. He's a big guy but the grub wasn't all for him. Mr. Stoe is a board member of the Ross Community Rink and Rec Association. "We formed it into a nonprofit probably close to 15 years now, and we hold fundraisers every summer and winter to help improve the grounds," said Stoe, a 1997 Roseau High School graduate. How big a community is Ross? It isn't a trick question. Some small...
by Ryan Honl The table at the executive board meeting room at LifeCare hospital last week was full of sketches and diagrams for an unique free event coming to Roseau on August 8 from 3-6 p.m. The Filipino community has grown in the area and especially so with LifeCare hiring many of them to fill difficult to hire positions such as lab work, nursing, and nursing assistants. Currently there are many of them at the hospital and clinics. Thirteen more are soon on the way. "We've had to recruit a...
Essay by: Delaynna Mortvedt English 7/Hour 2 Wolf Ridge Reflection April 5, 2024 “You are going to have the time of your life and you’re never going to want to come home,” assumed my mom while we were packing. I thought she was overemphasizing every little detail. Little did I know, her presumption was in fact right. The trip has made many memories, laughs, new found friendships, and numerous learning experiences. Two weeks later, I am still giddy with excitement every time I think about each memory. The learning groups we were assigned to were...
Impatience is a form of unbelief. It's what we begin to feel when we start to doubt the wisdom of God's timing or the goodness of his guidance. The opposite of impatience is a deepening, ripening, peaceful willingness either to wait for God where you are, or to persevere where you are currently. The Battle Against Unbelief When the way you planned to run your day, or the way you planned to live your life is cut off or slowed down, the unbelief of impatience tempts you in two directions,...

I've written maybe 1,600 columns in the last 30 years. A most recent one, "With the Mat Rats at the Muni" elicited two interesting responses - one locally and the other from Topeka. Let me start locally, which just happened on Tuesday morning when Jack Swanson, the former esteemed local radio broadcaster, called. We go back a ways. I drove in early one morning in the 1980s to watch Prince Charles and Princess Di get married on TV. Jack hosted a number of scalawags and scoundrels including me...
It was nice to hear I was missed last week! Although, it was a nice break from writing. It does get to a person when you have a deadline every week. It seems like you just finish and it's time to do it again! Just ask Bro, Laurel or Ryan! I will always be amazed how Bro has written for so many years and does such a spectacular job! Some of you may have "words" for his column, but you can't tell me his features aren't topnotch! There are also those who love his column. The Fourth of July ended...
The Mall of America is an American icon at this point. With 5.6 million square feet it was the largest mall in the world but now falls behind the current largest mall in the world which is in China. The new South China Mall has 6.46 million square feet. It looks like a spaceship. Some of the stats behind malls of these sizes are amazing. According to its website the Mall of America cost $650 million dollars to build in 1990s dollars. It has 520 businesses and even has its own zip code. Forty... Full story

Since all the squawking about global warming the record high temps for the day have been watched more closely. 1936 seems to be the hottest most of the time. Mom was born in McKenzie County, North Dakota in 1925. Grpa moved his family to Roseau County in 1937. Once when asked why he said “my daughter is twelve years old and has never seen it rain.” He talked about fencing in Roosevelt’s work program to earn a few dollars to survive. It was so hot that when you worked your shirt didn’t get wet with sweat, but turned white from the salt in it and... Full story
