    Laurel Latham|Aug 4, 2018

Minnesota Reading Corps and Math Corps are looking for a few hundred more openings for tutors throughout the state. "One in three third graders struggle with reading proficiency and nearly one-half of Minnesota eighth grade students aren't meeting proficiency levels in math," explained Jennifer Breding, recruiter for Minnesota Reading and Math Corps. "Students who are not reading well by third grade are four times more likely to drop out before receiving their high school diploma. Eleven...

Teachers return to their classrooms for teacher workshops beginning August 27. The first student day is September 4. With that said, there are many school related events and activities taking place prior to the start of school. How can I stay up-to-date with school events and activities? For parents, it’s always a good thing to talk to your children about what’s happening in their day-to-day life including school. For parents and members of the community, this question can be generally answered...

  • Back-to-School

    Larry Guggisberg|Aug 4, 2018

School Matters by Larry Guggisberg Combines and grain haulers are running about in the fields and the dog days of summer are on the horizon. Both are a clear signal the summer recess will soon be over. Here’s some important notes about the start of school: • If you haven’t already done so, parents new to the School District should register their child(ren) in the High School or Elementary School Office as soon as possible. Likewise, parents who intend to transfer their child(ren) out of the R...

  • Back to School is in the Air

    Jodi Wojciechowski|Aug 4, 2018

Has the Roseau County Fair really come and gone? Did Crazy Days happen this week? Am I really seeing farmers burn their fields? The answers to these questions is unfortunately, YES! All these events that are taking place tells me it's almost Fall and school will be starting in the near future. Some parents may be ready for school to start up again and others not so much. I'm on the not so much side. I realize those with younger children that are in daycare, summer means added daycare expense....

  • HELP NEEDED!

    Pastor Joe|Aug 4, 2018

Recently Polaris had a large sign displayed at the corner of Hwy’s 11 and 89. The gist of the sign was, “Now Hiring,” although they did it in a more highly attractive way with bright color and starting wages. Out in front of the Polaris factory is a smaller sign which simply says, “Now Hiring.” You can’t build “Rangers,” or snowmobiles, or anything for that matter, without the right and sufficient help. Now you might work on one of the “lines” at Polaris, but your job is significant. If it wasn’t for you the job wouldn’t get done. Th...

    Keith Cumming|Aug 4, 2018

If you run a race track and you hear there is a chance of "scattered" showers in the forecast, you're thinking please scatter them somewhere else. But as Mother Nature would have it, she scattered some light rain over the Greenbush Race Park about 10 minutes before race time. Officials sent the cars to the pits from packing the track, and let the track sit for about half an hour. After reworking the track and packing it in again, racing got under way 50 minutes later. Fifteen NLRA Late Models took the track for their feature and it would be...

  • Learning Through Experience

    Aug 4, 2018

As head coach of the Roseau Legion Post #24 baseball team I felt obligated to address some of the issues that were covered in last week’s issue. The prior “letter to the editor” highlighted a lack of sportsmanship on behalf of a few baseball players and a lack of follow-through from the coaching staff. Hopefully this will give readers a better understanding of what went on, how things were handled, and where we go from here. In our district tournament game two Fridays ago, we did have a pair of players throw equipment and the players conti...
