  • Roseau County Voters

    Martha Monsrud|Aug 10, 2024

Due to a ballot error, many voters who reside in mail ballot precincts have received a replacement ballot. The error that occurred involved a referendum question by Independent School District No. 2683 (Greenbush-Middle River). Some voters who are not residents of the Greenbush-Middle River School District received a ballot that included the question that should not have. Because of timing markers and other rotation rules with the ballots, unfortunately, all these precincts had to have new ballots mailed. We have been informed that if you...

  • Getting Up High For the City's Beautification

    Jeff Olsen|Aug 10, 2024

by Jeff Olsen In the City of Roseau, it's the little things that we walk by and quickly forget. We might not even say hi to someone repairing the sidewalk or working on a water main break. Or hanging Christmas lights. A week ago Wednesday, two Roseau city temporary employees were maneuvering ladders for an elevated paint job outside the Roseau City Center. The older gentleman, Adam Knochenmus, mentioned that he had been teaching phy ed and health in Bagley for five years before deciding it was...

  • The Lady and her pedal bike really do get around

    Jeff Olsen|Aug 10, 2024

by Jeff Olsen Hannah Hinrichs, presently of Beaver Township in the Hayes Lake area southeast of Roseau, has this old bike that has pounded some big hills. Not around here! For sure, this is mostly flat land. Hannah originally hails from North Branch, Minnesota, and recently completed a ride that tested her butt but not her sense of humor. What's unique is her great laugh and her go-with-the-flow persona. She has been a forester with the Wannaska DNR for the past four and a half years and isn't b...

  • Write On: Dreaming of Summer

    Aug 10, 2024

by: Hank Braaten Roseau Community School I’ve been dreaming, Sitting in school Waiting for the warm months of summer Oh, it’s such a bummer That it can’t be sooner Dreaming of the days When I can fish Oh that’s my biggest wish To be standing alongside the river Baiting my hook Chilling with the boys Drinking a dewski dan And getting on our tan Toes in the sand We head up to shore Cast our lines in Thinking about who will get the biggest But then with just one look Down with the current I see a fish jump Then my eyes open Realizing I’ve be...

  • Cleaning House

    Julie Elick|Aug 10, 2024

    1. Judging others is a classic way of distracting yourself from your own flaws. People have been using the following technique to avoid facing themselves honestly. To stop this harmful practice, you need to examine yourself regularly, though this tends to be painful, it can also be a rich blessing. Everyone has feet of clay. Everyone falls short of perfection. Heightened awareness will point you toward Christ and to his sacrificial provision. The rest is up to you as to how you respond. 2....

  • Don't Eat the Apple!

    Pastor Joe Elick 1040-2021|Aug 10, 2024

Do you know why you do what you do? The late George MacDonald, a fine Christian author, and a contemporary of C.S. Lewis, said in one of his books: “You know nothing of whence your impulses, your desires, your tendencies, your likings come. They may spring now from some chance, as of nerves diseased now from some roar of a wandering, bodiless devil; now from some infant hate in your heart; now from the greed of lawlessness of some ancestor you would be ashamed of if you knew him; or it may b...

  • A trip down memory lane with a few detours

    Jeff Olsen|Aug 10, 2024

What a truly wonderful Olympics! Haven't watched one second of it, but I follow it online. Beginning this Monday and running through Sunday, August 11, is women's freestyle, men's Greco-Roman, and men's freestyle wrestling. It would be the very best in the world if the Russians were present. They're not because of sanctions for earlier doping. Even the Chinese have some exceptional wrestlers; and Iran has phenomenal grapplers. Our Yanks will hopefully have a great Olympics and one of my friends...

  • Shoulder Surgery

    Jodi Wojciechowski|Aug 10, 2024

Monday came and I received the call around 11:30 a.m. that we needed to have mom to her surgery in Grand Forks at 6 a.m.! I wasn't too thrilled for such an early time since that meant we would have to go to Grand Forks and spend the night. I like to find the positive in a shitty situation and the positive in this one was that it was B's birthday. We could take him out to eat on his actual birthday. He picked Charra's and it was a great meal, as always. Mom doesn't think much of Mexican, but she...

  • The Bald Eagle is Officially Official

    Ryan Honl|Aug 10, 2024

Moving back here to the Promised Land five years ago, one thing I never realized growing up is that there are bald eagles all over the place here. One amateur bird historian in the area said there are more of them nowadays so it's not surprising I didn't see many growing up. Whether or not that's true it was the first time I've paid attention I guess. They're all over the place out in the Wannaska area as you drive around, gathering on the roads eating whatever has met its fate by passing motori...
