  • There's no lack of local candidates in Roseau

    Jeff Olsen|Aug 17, 2024

by Jeff Olsen Right off, at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Roseau City Clerk Beth Carlson remarked that everyone has an opponent except for incumbent Mayor Dan Fabian, who faces no opposition. However, long-term incumbent Roseau City Councilmember Pat Novacek, who filed for reelection, will face opposition. "There are two openings and four candidates," said Ms. Carlson. Incumbent Mary Hayes chose not to run for reelection. Three Roseau residents - Keith Severson, Oliver Ullman, and Kavan Lovgren - have file... Full story

  • This isn't his first law enforcement rodeo

    Jeff Olsen|Aug 17, 2024

by Jeff Olsen Roseau County Deputy Sheriff Dan Davidson was standing in the parking lot at the Kevin Johnson Auto Service in Roseau. The man doesn't frown like a drill instructor upon being asked dumb questions. He smiles. Mr. Davidson was asked if he's ever been called Dapper Dan. "Nobody's ever called me that before." And he didn't growl. Where's your hometown? "That's interesting. I was born in Minneapolis but I went to school in Jefferson, South Dakota. So, I kind of grew up halfway in...

    Ryan Honl|Aug 17, 2024

by Ryan Honl The theater at the Roseau school was a buzz of activity last week culminating in a great play called Hansel and Gretel involving local kids between first grade and high school. Over 150 people attended the play last Friday. The program was put on by a group called Storybook Theatre that hasn’t been here in Roseau for five years because of COVID and reorganizing the program by taking over from a group called Prairie Fire that had been doing it for 30 years. The program lasted a w...

  • Minnesota School Districts face funding crisis

    Tom Jerome|Aug 17, 2024

School Districts across the State of Minnesota are dealing with a funding crisis. The education funding formula provided by the State of Minnesota is failing to keep up with the rate of inflation and the costs of operating a school district. The Minnesota current funding formula provides $7,281 dollars per pupil in revenue. Due to legislation failing to keep pace with inflation and rising costs a gap of approximately $1,264 dollars per pupil exists. If the current funding formula adjusted with i... Full story

  • Dreamers and Doers

    Julie Elick|Aug 17, 2024

In this life, there are dreamers and there are doers. Dreamers live in a world of lofty ideas; doers live in the here and now to make them happen. Once the lofty idea has been fulfilled, the dreamer moves on, while the doer sticks around to deal with the lasting consequences. It's sad that the world tends to value and enshrine the dreamers over the forgotten doers - (Quote by Joe Olson) It is easy to come up with ideas. And it is a good thing to dream. But the maintenance of that dream is a...

  • Two Important Things

    Pastor Joe Elick 1040-2021|Aug 17, 2024

There are two important things which set Christianity apart from other religions: The Atonement, that is, Jesus’ sacrifice on the Cross for our sins, and the Resurrection. Jesus was not just another religious martyr. The apostle Paul was extremely bold concerning the importance of the Resurrection. In Corinthians 15 he wrote: “And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith…For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised either. And if Christ has...

  • If it ain't in the bag, it ain't in the bag

    Jeff Olsen|Aug 17, 2024

That's a saying that was coined by my good friend, Dale Jaenicke, which is similar to "Don't count your chickens before they hatch." In other words, skip the bragging. Or, as I prefer, "Keep a low profile" - which is hard to do in the newspaper business. The only place I have campaign slogans is in my outhouse. That's to cover up the open cracks in the north wall - especially in the winter. But back to politicians, whose credibility should always be suspect - like in this NPR headline on August...

  • Surgery and tattoos

    Jodi Wojciechowski|Aug 17, 2024

Mom has made it through her first week of post-surgery! Everything seems to be going pretty good. The pain is minimal. My guess was it would be, in comparison to what her shoulder was like before surgery. Her sister Janet is staying with her and they are getting a lot of quality time! Both are still alive yet. Lol! I mentioned last week it was Brandon's birthday. I did get a cute pic so I had to include it this week. B was hoping to get a new tattoo machine for his birthday and, of course, he... Full story

  • CSPAN on the Internet is Forever

    Ryan Honl|Aug 17, 2024

"Thank you Madam Speaker for the nice introduction but I'm not actually a retired Command Sergeant Major and never held a weapon of war on a battlefield because I was never in a war. I did leave my men behind before they deployed to a war though so I could become a Washington swamp creature. That counts for something right?" That would have been the answer I would have suggested to Tim Walz since it would actually be the truth. But I'm not his advisor, since I love freedom and despise socialism...

  • Fifty Years Ago

    Sheldon Larson|Aug 17, 2024

Fifty years ago when first married most of our friends were our parents’ age. Normally there is a lot more to learn from people that have been there done that. The downside is that they are all passed on. When looking back they were all farmer labor democrats. It is a pretty safe bet none of them would approve of what has happened to their party. Today’s radical liberal left dems are destroying our country like never before. Here is an opinion from a former judge. “I am a student of law whose age is 85. My first year of college was 68 years...

  • Lonnie Eugene Hagen, 72

    Aug 17, 2024

Badger- Lonnie Eugene Hagen was born on June 7, 1952 in Roseau to LuVerne and June Hagen, the 2nd of six children. Lonnie farmed with his dad while growing up and after graduating from Badger School. He and his sisters liked the challenge of riding the calves in their pens. They could never stay on, so Lonnie came up with the idea of tying his sister Sherry's ankles together underneath the calf's belly. This plan didn't work like he thought (or maybe did as he planned) and Sherry slid under the...

  • Chai

    Tom Palen|Aug 17, 2024

I was on my way to northern California, pulling a Scamp trailer. It was late, around midnight, and I was in the middle of nowhere Nevada when the state trooper turned on his lights to pull me over. I wasn't speeding, so I had no idea why I was being stopped. I greeted him, "Good evening. I usually know why I'm getting pulled over, but I have no idea tonight." The officer laughed, then said, "You don't have any lights on the trailer." "Really?" I was surprised. "I just had the wiring on the car...
