by Ryan Honl A wonderful opportunity presented itself to go on the Polaris tour of the factory last weekend. It was the 70th Anniversary so that made it extra special. It all started with an amazing breakfast serving several hundred people or more. Then everyone had an opportunity if they wanted to move throughout the plant with a Polaris tour guide. It was a very busy place on Saturday. If you were looking for the nicest guy on earth that would be Bill Petersen, who works in the warehouse and...
by Ryan Honl One of the highlights of the Polaris Anniversary events is the gathering of snowmobile racing legends and honoring those who have passed on. During the 70th it was no different. The Roseau Memorial Arena was packed with visitors wandering around looking at all the machines. You had to make sure to stand aside in the aisles so people could move around. Not all of them were race machines. There were plenty of Sno Travelers of all kinds that were manufactured in the 1950s and early 196...
by Jeff Olsen Recently, Mayor Fabian perked up when he was asked if he was 65. "If you think I'm 65, you're my best friend today," he said. How old are you? "I'm as old as Polaris is. How's that sound?" Dan Fabian is a 1954 model. The mayor was asked about what's in the works for the Guest House intersection where the stoplights will be removed in 2025. "I call it the Guest House Corner, and it sounds like that is going to happen next summer." He added that sometimes those projects stay on sched...
by Laurel Latham The very first Yellow Rose 5K Walk/Run was held the morning of August 14, 2004, with the Warroad Pioneer headline proclaiming the 5K a success. 259 people participated in the 2004 event sponsored by the Marvin Anniversary Team in celebration of the Marvin founder's arrival to Warroad 100 years ago. Funds raised in the first 5K were donated to the local food shelf. Plaques were given to overall male and female winners: Eric Palmquist and Lori Grover. This year's 21st Annual...
by Jeff Olsen On a recent Wednesday, the young lady was spotted watering the elevated flower pots. Tijah Menlove occasionally gets sprayed when it's windy. "My family moved here 13 years ago yesterday," she said on Wednesday, August 14. What a memory, she was told. "It's one of our friends' birthday. That's how I remember it." She said her name just once. What do they call you? Just Ms. T? "I usually just go by Tijah. It rhymes with Elijah," she said as she watered a flower pot high over her...
Poem by: Tate Dale Roseau Community School Teacher: Carla Olsen From indoors to outdoors The water slapping against the boat Birds diving for fish Species of the lake so active Fish swimming so gracefully below Lures descending from each person Walleyes not suspecting the hook All goes quiet The sound of a hookset Breaks through the silence Creating nothing but chaos All the people in the boat excited to see The monster walleye The fish not wanting to give in When the walleye finally gives in...
Proverbs 4, “Listen, my sons, to a father’s instruction; pay attention and gain understanding. I give you sound learning, so do not forsake my teaching. For I too was a son to my father, still tender, and cherished by my mother. Then he taught me, and he said to me, ‘Take hold of my words with all your heart; keep my commands, and you will live. Get wisdom, get understanding; do not forget my words or turn away from them. Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will...
Hope is a very powerful word. It is a steering wheel. It will steer you away from despair. Where and how do you find hope? You may have distraction, but distraction will never bring you into a permanent safe place, it is just a band-aid for the time being. Jesus said in John 12:35, "The man who walks in the dark does not know where he is going." There is a moral darkness without Christ, which prevents a person from knowing where they are going. There is a spiritual darkness which convinces a...
I don't think many of us plan to live to 100. Once, I remarked to Oliver Ullman, who said that he plans to live to that ripe old age and beyond, "But all your friends will be dead." He shook that off like the great Sandy Koufax of the Los Angeles Dodgers did with his catcher. "I'll make new friends," said Mr. Ullman, who is well-known in this community as a colorful outdoor chef. He just might do it. I won't! One who did it for sure was the amazing Olga Markovich, who died last week at 101. We m... Full story
Mom started OT this week and it went well. She did get sore but I think that is to be expected. We found a lift chair for her and that definitely has helped the sleeping situation! Overall, progress is being made. Kyle and I made a trip to Grand Forks to bring B some of his mother's home-cooked meals. We also brought him some tattoo supplies he had ordered. Since we were there why not get another piece of my leg tattoo! B was feeling a bit under the weather, but he still did an amazeballs job on... Full story
I figured that should be the catchy title for you snowflakes that are reading this. A title like "The Democrat Party has Sold Its Soul to Sacrificing Babies at the Altar of Abortion" would be too harsh so I'll just leave that here. Apparently I cause some controversy around town with my opinion column. I had a very respectable gentleman at the events this last weekend with a great deal of intestinal fortitude say his peace to my face. Now that is what you call a free country where disagreement... For those of us that still have a bit of a wild child in them and are still up at 9:30 p.m. check out the supermoon coming up in the east. Until it gets above the smoke from the Canadian wild fires it is almost red! The weatherman said that the supermoon is as close to earth as it gets. That is why it looks so big. Combined with smoke for extra color it is fun to see. The cavemen had to have thought the worst when looking at the same moon and not understanding any of it. Kind of like looking at today’s world and not understanding any of it. T...
Mr. Common Sense threw out a verse from Proverbs 2 last month in one of his articles: “God grants a treasure of common sense to the honest.” I’ve made my opinion known that Ryan Honl doesn’t seem to grasp the concept of common sense, but now I’ve come to the realization that he doesn’t understand the meaning of honest. To help him, here’s some definitions from a couple of dictionaries. From Oxford: “free of deceit and untruthfulness”. From Webster: “A refusal to lie, steal, or deceive in any way”. Honl’s common sense article from last week...

Roseau- Olga (née Walchuk) Markovich, a loving mother and doting grandmother, passed away on August 13, 2024, peacefully at home. Until one week before she died, she was still playing cards and Yahtzee with her favorite competitor and son-in-law, Warner Hendrickson. She will be long remembered as a true friend, artist, beautician, jigsaw puzzle aficionado. Above all, she had this natural brilliance that made every visit to her residence a cherished moment. She treated every visitor like a king o...
There was an old song by Jim Stafford called Spiders and Snakes. The song is about Mary Lou, a school-age girl who is sweet on a classmate. She invites him to walk her home from school. On the way, she tells him, "I don't have to go right home, and I would kinda like to be alone some, long as you would." The young man answered, "Me too." So, they took a stroll and wound up down by a swimming hole; she wanted to get romantic. But in his adolescent awkwardness, the school boy finds a frog in the...
