by Jeff Olsen On the final Wednesday in September, Leif Eidsmoe, who led a group of sophomores, faculty members and DNR foresters to the Roseau School Forest, was impressed. "It was awesome, it was hot, and it was good," he said with a chuckle. There are some years that the weather is absolutely lousy and bitterly cold or damp. Not this time. By noon, it was about 80 degrees. "That's better than rain," he said, mentioning that it was mostly the same forestry crew. "Except we had three younger...
by Jeff Olsen When school ended in early June, numerous kids might have thought, "Beautiful! No more reading." Well, they were wrong. At the Roseau Public Library, librarians Stacey Rusek and Tessa Zimney had some of these same kids excited about reading. "From ages up to 17, we had them sign up at the very beginning of the summer and each received a prize, a little bag of goodies, and information about our summer reading," said Stacey. She added that they did something different this summer.... Full story
by Jeff Olsen Darlene Danielson and her teammates did it again as they raised considerable money for further medical research. Darlene isn't exactly a spring chicken, but nobody does it better in lassoing in the donations for a great cause. Somewhere out in the universe, St. Jude, the patron saint of impossible causes, is smiling down on an old gal like Darlene, who's not some dainty lass but a manure-stepping, unflappable promoter for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. "This was the 25th...
Essay by: Brooklyn Hulst Roseau Community School Teacher Carla Olsen If my heart was a house You would find the door unlocked. Walls lined with laughter, Windows wide open, Rooms filled with memories, Where love cannot hide. In the kitchen, a pot of honesty on a gentle simmer. Tastes of joy and kindness that makes the soul glimmer. The living room warm, With comfort’s embrace. Pictures of cherished moments, Fill every space. Up the stairs of desire to the realm of dreams, Where every emotion streams. The attic stores wishes, some yet to come t... Full story
Ephesians 5: 15-16 Be very careful, then, how you live-not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. After every period of exaltation, we are brought down with a sudden rush into things as they are, where it is neither beautiful nor poetic nor thrilling. The height of the mountaintop is measured by the drudgery of the valley-but it's in the valley that we have to live for the glory of God. When we are on the mountaintop, we see the glory of God, but...
In Hebrews 13:1-6, the Bible gives us practical, yet profound instructions on how we should live as people of faith. The passage touches on love, hospitality, marriage, contentment, and trust in God. These are areas that deeply affect our lives, and when we follow these instructions, we reflect God's character to the world. Let’s walk through these verses together, examining how they apply to our everyday lives. Loving One Another (Hebrews 13:1) The writer of Hebrews begins by urging us to “keep on loving each other as brothers.” The Greek... Full story

On Saturday afternoon, it was a good bet that a gathering of middle-aged wrestlers would include some take downs by the 1996 wrestling squad. Two of their teammates, Dr. Chad Anderson and Dr. Joel Fugleberg, were available to do back, neck and knee manipulations if their chiropractic services were required. None was needed. Everyone seemed content to remember old memories even if they could easily have shot a takedown on a teammate and then the fun would begin. The most likely chap to start it...
According to the Tax Policy Center, Minnesota is ranked the 6th highest taxed state in the nation. So far Americans have a right to move to any state they want to much to the disappointment of Minnesota Democrats that are no friends of farmers, laborers, and our wallets. But democrats have never been fans of math. The more they steal from farmers and laborers as well as our wallets results in no end to the cash cow for them. The common sense they fail to recognize is that taxpayers that leave... Full story
After frost the last two mornings the leaves are falling in a steady stream this morning. Nothing in the world we live in seems to last very long. The colors that last few days have been awesome! This old goat paid the price yesterday morning once again for getting old. A cataract on the left eye had to be dealt with. Just wanted to give a thank you and a bit of a shout-out to the good people at LifeCare. From admittance to being escorted out when done the level of professionalism, respect and courtesy has to be commended. As noted a few years...

When I think of the start and finish, my mind turns to racing. The local drivers with their stock cars on the dirt track in Eldon, Iowa; the jockeys riding their horses at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky; the athlete putting their heart and soul into running around the football field at the high school stadium; I think of oval tracks where the start and finish line are often the same line. Of course, not all races are that way. Grandma's Marathon starts in Two Harbors and finishes in...
by Laurel Latham “Music is the universal language of mankind.”--Henry Wadsworth Longfellow The winds picked up and the rain came down as the parking lot outside of Warroad RiverPlace Arts, Culture, & Event Center began to fill with the vehicles of those fortunate enough to have reserved tickets for the Grand Welcoming Concert on the evening of October 5th. Golf carts roamed the parking lot to pick up concert goers to keep them dry as they were delivered to the front entrance of RiverPlace. Exc...
