  • A 2024 Salute To Our Veterans at RHS

    Jeff Olsen|Nov 16, 2024

by Jeff Olsen On Monday afternoon before the Veterans Day Program kicked off at the Roseau High School gym, kindergartners stood on each side of the hallway waving flags in anticipation of when the veterans would begin marching in. None of them said, "Hey, mister, take my picture!" It's unlikely they will remember this particular day, but it was memorable in many ways. For sure, the older veterans will. Some have never forgotten coming home from overseas and there was no fanfare. On Veterans...

  • The Search For a Long Lost Polaris Jeep

    Ryan Honl|Nov 16, 2024

by Ryan Honl No, it’s not a Jeep that Polaris built, although Polaris certainly does make plenty of utility vehicles these days, including for the military. The Jeep we’re talking about is one that the newly formed Polaris company used in 1954 before the first snowmobile was produced. If you’ve seen it by chance or know anything about it, there’s an intense search for it. Shane Miller, of the Austin Bantam Society, contacted the newspaper about the search for the Polaris vehicle after he found a...

  • The Stein Family Takes A Leap Of Faith

    Laurel Latham|Nov 16, 2024

by Laurel Latham Dave Stein had a phenomenal hockey coach when he was growing up and playing for the Palm Desert Knights in Palm Springs, California. Palm Springs, a retirement location and winter snowbird destination, is noted for its mid-century modern architecture and art and cultural scene. It’s not an area one thinks of as a place to play ice hockey. Yet due to Coach Joe Boffa, the kids in Palm Springs learned how to play a good game of hockey. “I played soccer growing up in Palm Spr...

  • Write On: My Wolf Ridge Experience

    Nov 16, 2024

Essay by: Max Erickson Roseau Community School Mrs. Laugen Hello! Today I will be telling you about my favorite things about Wolf Ridge. First of all, I really liked the food even though I heard most people didn’t I even ate twelve delicious meatballs during dinner. I could’ve eaten more but I think it was for the better that I didn’t. Another highlight was geocaching. This class was one of my favorite’s and I would for sure recommend it to next year's 7th graders. The thing I liked most about geocaching was exploring with Silas. We ventured do...

  • Keeping Watch

    Julie Elick Olson|Nov 16, 2024

by Oswald Chambers When Jesus says, "Watch with me," he is telling us to watch with no private point of view at all. In the early stages of our life with him, we do not watch with Jesus; we watch for him and expect him to watch with us. It takes us time to begin to view everything that happens in the way our Lord views it-through the revelation of the Bible. Jesus asked his disciples to watch with him in the garden of Gethsemane, when peril was close at hand. In the same way, he comes to us, in...

  • Proclaiming the Good News: The Gospel's Power and Impact

    Pastor Gus Booth|Nov 16, 2024

In today's fast-paced world, it’s easy to forget the life-altering power of the gospel—the good news that Jesus Christ came to redeem humanity. Yet, in the Gospel of Mark, we find a reminder of its incredible significance. Mark 1:14b tells us, “Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God.” But what does it really mean to proclaim the gospel? To understand it fully is to grasp the heart of Christianity itself. At its core, the gospel is good news because it tells of God’s redemption of humanity. The term "gospel" itself originate...

  • Just Dig

    Tom Palen|Nov 16, 2024

In August of 2023, I traveled to Texas to visit my sister Patti and brother-in-law Bill. This was a different type of trip. I wasn't sure what to expect, and yet I knew exactly what to expect. The feeling was bittersweet. I wanted to see Patti and Bill, but also knew this would be the last time I would see Bill. Bill was in the transitioning stage under Hospice care, his cancer was winning the battle, and soon he would take his place in heaven. I was going to Texas to help my sister anyway I...

  • These will surely be exacting times

    Jeff Olsen|Nov 16, 2024

For years, I loved writing this column. It was fun and I had such wonderful characters to cover. Guys like Steve "Dog" Furuseth, Tallahassee Slim, Big Ernie and even goofy politicians. Furuseth was the best. No, he's not dead, but he could cause delightful mischief for everyone! Big Ernie is dead. He was a deer hunter and member of the "Over the Hill Gang" out in the Beltrami Island State Forest, a good sized bloke in his seventies who hailed from the Dilworth area and made very strong drinks. A...

  • Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve

    Jodi Wojciechowski|Nov 16, 2024

Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve is a national park of the United States that conserves an area of large sand dunes on the eastern edge of the San Luis Valley, and an adjacent national preserve in the Sangre de Cristo Range, in south-central Colorado. The park contains the tallest sand dunes in North America, up to 750 feet tall. It was a bit misty out the day we went but it was still fun. We went out on the back roads and B had to climb the sand dune and leave his mark. The rest of... Full story

  • Kids or War?

    Ryan Honl|Nov 16, 2024

Well, the school referendum failed, and by a large margin. 61% to 39%. And here's how not to end a referendum question on a ballot: BY VOTING "YES" ON THIS BALLOT QUESTION, YOU ARE VOTING FOR A PROPERTY TAX INCREASE. And yes, it's done in caps as anyone who voted saw. So it's not surprising it was overwhelmingly voted against. Who wants an increase in property taxes? That wasn't just Roseau. The vast majority of school referendums across Minnesota failed. I have a solution for education... Full story
