  • With the homespun Percy Erickson out in Pencer

    Jeff Olsen|Nov 23, 2019

by Jeff Olsen Once, he could stride gracefully through the deep snow while checking his trapline. Those were the days. On Monday, he was spotted coming out of his barn, walking in baby steps like he was maneuvering through a mine field, which is what his icy driveway is like these days. It's hell to get old. "I'm the youngest of my family and the last one left," said the 1938 model. He isn't on his last legs. He was a working man all his life, and he had a good woman. Nothing beats a good...

  • WRITE ON! The Icy Creek

    Nov 23, 2019

by Makena Hedlund, English 7, Mrs. Didrikson On a cold, cloudy day in late October of 2016, my family and I were at my grandparent’s house out in Malung for my cousin’s birthday. Now at this house there is a creek in the woods where we always played. We invited my sister to come along this time, but she refused because she thought we were going to push her in. Not having her there turned out to be lucky for her. After building a fort, which is now flooded after it rained a lot, my cousin, who is a year younger than me, and I were bored. Dee...

  • We need you if you're between 90 and 300 pounds!

    Jeff Olsen|Nov 23, 2019

You can take all your hockey sticks and pucks, your cheerleaders and fluff, your half court presses and slam dunks, and it's still a toss up of which is the greatest sport. I remember Johnny Unitas and the Baltimore Colts with Alan "the Horse" Ameche and Lenny Moore, all three of them Hall of Famers from a hard-nosed time in the late 1950s when nobody danced in the end zone after scoring a touchdown. These guys weren't a chorus line. They were a wrecking crew, and their job was scoring TDs -...

  • Happy Thanksgiving!

    Jodi Wojciechowski|Nov 23, 2019

Sometimes, it's easier to focus on what we don't have, rather than what we do have. It's important to take time out and remember all of the things to be thankful for that many of forget about. Including me! Having a Partner If you have the right partner it's great. It's nice to have someone that you can always depend on...at least that's how mine is. Someone who makes life easier. Kids Brandon is definitely a bright spot in my life, and now Ariah too! (My other child) Your Parents and Family...

  • I DON'T WANT TO GET "RELIGIOUS," BUT...

    Pastor Joe Elick|Nov 23, 2019

Now some of you upon reading the title above may be saying: "What are you talking about, all your articles are religious." A point well taken, but I'm thinking about something else. Between two and three thousand people are exposed to my writing each week through the Roseau Time-Region and Facebook (that doesn't mean they all read what I write), and I suspect that many who are readers pursue a spiritual dimension in their lives. But I would like to touch the lives of some who embrace other...

by Chris Francis Early one morning, Farmer Francis set out to feed his turkeys. He was the owner of a tiny little turkey farm in Burlington, Ontario. He was the poorest man in all the land, but he was happy. He had lots of work to do every day, and most importantly he had to feed his turkeys.
