by Jeff Olsen A week ago Thursday, Keith Okeson, the CEO of LifeCare Medical Center in Roseau, didn't need any prompting to recall that they are presently dealing with a high positivity Covid rate in Roseau County. He's also aware that Minnesota is in the top three states with Covid infections in the nation. "We've been very busy with collecting samples, running tests, and there are a lot of positive Covid cases in our county," he said. Mr. Okeson knows the numbers, noting that they have...
by Jeff Olsen Roseau County Sheriff Steve Gust isn't looking for any stick-up artists, swindlers, check bouncers, or carjackers. In fact, in a way, he's in the hot seat with the Minnesota Department of Corrections. "We're short on manpower at the jail," he said last week, admitting that they're running their detention center with one less jailer than is required by state law. "We've got two shifts per day and each shift has two people - a dispatcher and a jailer," he said, noting that the...
by Jeff Olsen Brian Donarski, a former military man, is retired after seeing combat in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Tim Friederichs, a rural Barnesville farmer, marveled after meeting former President George W. Bush at the Las Colinas Country Club in Irving, Texas, on Veterans Day. They are 1987 Roseau High School graduates and from different worlds of experiences. Mr. Donarski, a former Marine and Army Special Forces soldier, invited Mr. Friederichs to join him in Texas for the 10th Annual...
Artwork by: April Hugg Roseau Community School Art Teacher and Supervisor: Mary Vatnsdal Why should this flower delay so long To show its tremulous plumes? Through the slow summer, when the sun Called to each frond and whorl That all he could for flowers was being done, why did it not uncurl? It must have felt that fervid call Although it took no heed, Waking but now, when leaves like corpses fall, And saps all retrocede.... Full story
We would switch from my grandmother's house, to my Aunt June and Uncle Audy's house. We usually had 16 people attending. One long table with a card table set up for some of the little people. Often as children, we would run around chasing each other, or running up the street and back. I still love the smell of turkey and dressing. Dark meat would be my choice, along with the heart and gizzard. Sweet potatoes would always be served along with fluffy mashed potatoes. I made sure I took enough... Full story
Take a look in the mirror. Can you see your face? Good! Can you see that big zit? Damn, already your day sucks. But you can see. You can see a sunrise, a new blanket of snow, the colors of your shirt and pants, what a cloud looks like, and even the smile on your dad's face when he greets you. Sight is a remarkable gift. I recently read the obituary in the New York Times on Ed Lucas, who lived an amazing life after becoming totally blind when a line drive scored a direct hit between his eyes. He... Full story
Can you smell it? The faint scent of turkey, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie drifts through the air this week as we all gather with our family and friends to celebrate Thanksgiving. With such busy lives, it can be difficult to slow down and take time to feel thankful for what we do have. However, Thanksgiving marks an important season for all of us to take a moment and remember the little things in life-and every little thing we're thankful for. This year I am thankful to still be here to...
