by Laurel Latham Sparkling lights, friends gathered around a bonfire, a hayride/sleigh ride, Christmas carols and hot chocolate; it's an old fashioned Christmas this Sunday, December 8th, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at The Pioneer Farm & Village, two miles west of Roseau along Hwy 11. "Christmas lights go on when it starts getting dark, usually between 4:30-5:00 p.m.," reports Dennis Smedsmo. On Monday evening with one Roseau High School freshman in attendance, per Mr. Tyler Landman's Civics class semester project, Mayor Jeff Pelowski addressed the young lady, asking who had been her second grade teacher. She answered, "Mrs. LaPlante." Mr. Pelowski followed up with his second question, "Do you remember me speaking to your class?" Gabby, the daughter of Shawn and Carla Olsen, received a little help from Roseau County Commissioner Jack Swanson, who turned around in his seat in the...
by Jeff Olsen The young lady, a senior, had just entered the Roseau High School Principal's Office, possibly stopping by to say hi to one of the secretaries, when they chose her. "Here's Brooke Zagone," said Mary Jo Preteau, who had been assisting Dan Urness, the RHS Guidance Counselor, in his quest for a student to highlight the day before Thanksgiving. What a highlight! Brooke, a statuesque brunette and the daughter of Nick and Kriste Zagone, is a ray of sunshine every day of the week and a...
by Jeff Olsen Luis Enriquez, a 2018 Roseau High School graduate, once weighed close to 300 pounds but he's always had spunk, a ready smile, a winning personality, and a knack for spotting great opportunities. His latest one started with pushing a broom. He did just that, starting on the ground floor at Roseau County Ford, which is owner Paul Blomquist's modus operandi, and Luis has never looked back. He's now a college student. "I started here halfway through my senior year of high school. I...
by Jaylen Lipscomb, English 7, Mrs. Didrikson In this story, I'm going to be telling you about the time I cheated in sixth grade. It taught me a lesson, and now I will never, ever do it again. It started sometime in the middle of the year. Last year in 6th grade, we would have spelling notebooks and we would do certain units every week. We would usually get 2-3 days to work on them, we would have to do them in cursive which I wasn't very good at. During the days we'd correct them, which I think...
Do you know what it's like to be chosen? Does it make you feel good, like your life counts to someone? Think back to your grade school days. Maybe one of your teachers wanted volunteers from the class to help with something or even be in a play. The teacher asks for a raise of hands, and they shoot up; maybe accompanied by, "Me, me, pick me!" As I think back to being chosen I remember being chosen in Jr. High to be on the school "Safety Patrol." I was excited. Being on the school Safety Patrol...
Of all the characters and rascals that I have dealt with in my lifetime, none can beat the beggars who have hit on me at Christmas and graduation. Once, I had a daughter-in-law, a wonderful gal, who got upset when I wrote in this space that some scoundrel from Thief River Falls, whom I'd never heard of, had sent me a graduation announcement. It was her nephew. "Who the hell is this scamp?" I typed before starting an early morning fire in the wood stove on a cold May morning using that...
I survived Thanksgiving. I wasn't sure how I was going to get it all done with everything else going on, but I did. Sarah, my partner in crime, helped so that was appreciated. We have been preparing Thanksgiving and Christmas meals for the family together for quite a few years and we have it down pretty well. The whole family seemed to enjoy their meal and conversation, so all in all I think it was a success. Once Thanksgiving was over it was time to get the paper situated for the next week. I...

The Minnesota Department of Transportation reminds the public that it is illegal to deposit snow on or next to a public highway or street. Minnesota law and many local ordinances prohibit the plowing, blowing, shoveling or otherwise placing of snow onto public roadways. This includes the ditch and right of way area along the roadside. Pushing snow on public roadways becomes an increasing issue with each snow storm during the winter because snow piles become larger and more difficult to manage. “Placing snow on or near a public road creates h...
As soon as you realize there is no wagon and you ARE the wagon, then you begin to live life. Today's mindset coaching article will rewire your brain from the traditional bandwagon programs. The Warroad River Watershed District eliminated a safety hazard on a township road this season when contractors moved a stretch of the West Branch Warroad River from the erosion-prone road ditch back to its historic channel. The grant was part of $3 million in additional disaster aid made available in 2016 to 15 local governments handling the aftermath of 2014 flooding. In late July, contractors drove sheet piling — part o...
