  • The songwriting man from Nashville with his roots here

    Jeff Olsen|Dec 7, 2024

by Jeff Olsen We all have dreams. Aaron Espe, a 2000 Roseau High School graduate, is in Nashville these days as a singer and songwriter. Earlier this month, he was asked if his singing style resembles the late greats Little Richard, Tony Bennett, or Tiny Tim. He laughed, adding that he was familiar with Tiny Tim, the falsetto singer of the 1960s. "I'd say I'm closer to James Taylor probably. My dad had his Greatest Hits on CD, so that was influential growing up. Aaron describes himself as more...

Recently, Stacy recalled her career as an EMT for the past 30 years. "I was first with Roseau...

  • Write On: Lake Life

    Dec 7, 2024

Poem by: Brynn Lagoo Roseau Community School Teacher: Mrs. Carla Olsen Whispers of water gentle and clear Like life's serenity, always near Mornings of mist, a tranquil sight Loons call out, taking flight. Ah, the summer's breeze upon my face As I set sail on the lake's embrace, The sun's warm rays, and golden hue. Reflecting off the water, sparkling and true. With every stroke, my paddle meets the tide gliding through the calmness, side by side. The gentle lapping of waves at the shore.... Full story

  • "Listen To My Voice"

    Julie Elick Olson|Dec 7, 2024

by Stephen Rowland I heard a first hand account of a pastor who nearly lost his life on a small airplane in Alaska. He and a lawyer friend were going to buy a ticket and fly commercial back home, but another pastor pilot convinced them to save some money and fly with him. They agreed and took off in that small airplane from Anchorage. Eventually they found themselves flying through dense clouds with no visibility. The pilot became disoriented and passed out. His eyes actually rolled back into hi...

  • Just a beautiful way to kick off this month

    Jeff Olsen|Dec 7, 2024

It's December and one of the nicest times of the year. To start with, I have to write an annual Xmas letter and highlight a few relatives, some fake characters, my screw-ups, and life in these times where I include some of you from up here. They love it. Especially when I single out some of the more colorful kids for our annual Christmas letter. Like weird Clifford, who has to be watched constantly because he is a pyromaniac. I've nicknamed him the Torch. I even include old memories about...

  • No One Is Above The Law.... Right

    Sheldon Larson|Dec 7, 2024

The flowering crabs in the front yard are a busy place. There are a few robins still hanging around. They are always more than welcome here, but for their own good they really need to go south. A flock of cedar waxwings stops in for a snack of red berries almost everyday. The pileated woodpecker is about the size of a small crow and stops in a couple of times almost every morning. The European starlings are not welcome and the survivors are discouraged from coming back. They are very aggressive birds that are cavity nesters. They steal nest...

December is a month when I remember to count my blessings more often than any other month. It's the time of year that I enjoy shopping for all the special people in my life. Grandchildren are always at the top of my list. I have six grandchildren, plus a bonus granddaughter. They are scattered from Seattle to Bismarck, Thief River Falls, Baudette and North Carolina. • Another Time

    Tom Palen|Dec 7, 2024

It wasn’t exactly your ordinary Thanksgiving Day. I set the alarm for 6:15 a.m. A good time to get up to start preparing a Thanksgiving Day feast – but I was only doing part of the cooking this year. Still, sometimes plans change. The first plan had me doing cranberry relish, sweet potatoes, dinner rolls, and pies. I made the relish Tuesday. (It’s best after resting at least 24 hours.) Then a friend delivered a pumpkin pie to my in-laws. One less pie to make; I was good with it either way and I...
