Roseau's own Bob Bergland, a Depression-era farm kid who had a passion for politics, people, and good deeds, died this past Sunday at LifeCare Roseau Manor at age 90. His funeral is Saturday, December 15, at Moe Lutheran Church in Roseau. Mr. Bergland, who was elected to four terms in the U.S. Congress but served only three terms before serving as the Secretary of Agriculture for the Carter Administration from 1977-1981, never seemed to lose his flair for people, politics and persuasion even as...
There is absolutely no reason for anyone to eat Christmas dinner alone! Once again the Eagles Aerie & Auxiliary have a delicious menu planned for this year’s Don’t Have Christmas Alone dinner at Four Seasons Senior Center in Roseau. “Four Seasons Senior Center is a wonderful place to have Christmas dinner!” said JoAnn Burkel. “Thora and her staff have the Senior Center decorated so festively for the holidays. It’s a wonderful time to visit with friends and neighbors and meet new people! The...
I’m not sure I’m a believer this past week and a half that God doesn’t give you more than you can handle. December is a busy month getting ready for Christmas, but it is also the busiest month at work. Cortney, our newest employee, is experiencing her first RTR Christmas. She is a rockstar and is doing amazing, but hopefully she doesn’t leave after next week! Until you experience a RTR Christmas week no one can prepare you for it. Add to Christmas with Kyle not feeling well. It started Sunday,...
Take a note, Lisa! Yes, Lisa Dunham has left this newspaper, but she had great secretarial skills in addition to thinking like a linebacker. We hit it off famously. She was the thunder and lightning in my life whenever I was in the office, grumbling and exhorting me to "Speed it up, Shorty." She wasn't dainty but she has a knack for my kind of language, which would shock some of these old dames and all the Baptists in this town. But she was as solid as gold if there was a scrap - you know, a...
To the Editor, During the November 27th county commissioner meeting, the county board voted to create a committee to implement a project aimed at helping ambulance, fire, and other first responders more quickly locate addresses when responding to emergencies across the county by installing reflective address numbers at the end of a property owners driveway. After hours of testimony from local Ambulance members, firefighters, law enforcement personnel, and several citizens of the county expressing the need for this project to move forward the...
To the Editor, Anyone worried about the future of our country needs to go to our young peoples Christmas program at our school. The quality of all the programs is rivaled only by the enthusiasm our teachers are able to get out of our children and grandchildren. We watched the K-3 programs and did not see a single child not participating and doing it with a smile. We obviously have a lot of very very good teachers and helpers. Thank you and keep up the good work. You give us the opportunity to be proud parents and grandparents. Keeping in the...

It's always a big thrill for a wrestler to win his first varsity tournament. Last Saturday at the Rodd Olson Invite in Crookston, Race Knochenmus and Sawyer Klatt came charging into the winners' circle, joining Chandler Mooney and Ben Olson on top of the podium. Following a first round bye, Race Knochenmus won on a first period pin over Mahnomen-Waubun's David Rock at the 1:11 mark to advance to the 138 pound finals against New York Mills' Gabe Geiser. In a smartly wrestled match, the Ram...

Coach Ken Hayden along with his faithful assistant Randy Nelson will be fielding a well rounded team with lots of experience. Ten seniors, along with one junior and three sophomores will be lacing up the shoes this year for the green and white. Most of the group of seniors have been playing together for quite a few years, and the coaches are excited to see what this season will bring. The senior players...
