by Jeff Olsen If Dan Fabian is ever at a loss for words, he's either asleep or he has suffered a cardiac arrest. His health is fine, and that's how he sees the City of Roseau. On Friday morning, December 6, Fabian was asked for his comments on his town in this calendar year. "Oh, man, the year 2024! Well, in terms of the city, number one, I'm really thankful for the people that live here and how we really work as a team," he said, crediting the different entities within the city. "We have...

There are 67 cats, and 30 dogs at the shelter that are waiting for their forever homes. “The reason m...
Poem by: Eliana Mast Roseau Community School Teacher: Mrs. Carla Olsen Friends are as essential to life as water. They quench the thirstiness of our hearts. Friends are like a spring rain, watering the plants within us, helping us grow too and beyond our full potential. When surrounded by friends, I am like a child jumping with joy through the puddles outside. Talking with a friend after a hard day is as refreshing as the first sip of water after a long run. Without water we are dead. But...
My Utmost for His Highest by Oswald Chambers Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet. - John 13:14 Ministering as opportunity surrounds us doesn't mean choosing our surroundings; it means ministering wherever God places us. The characteristics we manifest now, in our immediate surroundings, show God what we'll be like in other surroundings. It takes all of God's power in me to do commonplace things in the way God would do them. When...

You can take all your reindeer and Rudolph too, and nothing will ever top the elderly couple I sat across from while covering "Don't Spend Xmas Alone" at the Senior Citizen Center in Roseau about 20 years ago. Right away they stood out. They kept their coats on. They were octogenarians and stuffing their coat pockets with lefse and cookies. It was beautiful. Even better, there was no charge, and they likely had plastic bags inside those pockets to stash their loot. It was Christmas Day and they... Full story
This year has flown by. It's hard to believe it's almost New Year's. The time between Thanksgiving and Christmas has felt like a day. We did have a nice Thanksgiving with our family at my house. Sarah and I did the cooking and tried out a couple new appetizers, which went over well. My mom didn't make it over this year because she was sick. She had a really bad headache and her blood pressure was high. This had been going on for a bit so I wasn't surprised when she said she couldn't come. We...
If prison isn't already bad enough, the democrats have taken it to another level. For those of you ladies that might find yourselves in the Minnesota slammer, you'll be showering with Mr. Bradley Sirvio who dropped the Mr. part and insisted he needed to be in a Minnesota women's prison. Of course, the democrats obliged because you can identify as whatever works for you and Bradley is having the time of his life. That's one heck of a punishment to bear. Sirvio is serving his life term at his...
The good news is that Sunday the twenty-second is the shortest day. The bad news is that it takes about a month to notice the days getting longer. Good things come to those that wait. Sometimes a white Christmas is guaranteed as it almost always is. After butchering a beef last weekend there were eight bald eagles having lunch on the gut pile yesterday. They are quite the bird. My little dog and kitties are not allowed outside when they are around. Eagles like most other guests are fun to see come and good to see go. Speaking of good to see...
Last year I purchased a cute Nativity set for my children. It is made of plastic as part of the Fisher-Price 'Little People' line. There is a small stable for Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus. The three wisemen are there to worship amidst a donkey, lamb and cow. Music plays and a star lights up when an angel is placed on top. It's really adorable and, better still, unbreakable. I bought the set so my children could actually touch the figures. I wanted them to be able to cherish the meaning of Christmas and re-enact that special night without my... Full story

The Minnesota Department of Transportation and the rural municipality of Piney, Manitoba, Canada, will permanently close the Piney-Pinecreek Border Airport (48Y) northwest of Roseau on Friday, Dec. 27. The general aviation airport, located just west of Highway 89 about 20 miles northwest of Roseau, operated under an international agreement between MnDOT and the rural municipality of Piney, Manitoba, Canada, since 1949. The airport had very low use and faced large maintenance expenses including runway, apron and terminal reconstruction. The...
After church this morning, I went downstairs for fellowship - donuts and coffee, which is a good choice of refreshments. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like donuts. Granted, there are some people who shouldn’t be eating them (myself included,) but it doesn’t mean we don’t like them. Most everyone will agree donuts are delicious, but they can become a source of dispute. Even the spelling causes differences; is it a donut, or a doughnut? I usually spell it donut just to appease the masses (m...
by Jeff Olsen At the nine team Rock Ridge Tournament in Virginia last Saturday, the Rams had no champions but it's early in the season. At 107 pounds, 7th grader Cael Mack lost twice, both by technical falls before storming into the winner's circle to claim 5th place honors with a 12-2 major decision over Hibbing's Gavin Horst. Assistant coach Oliver Ullman liked what he saw. "Cael beat the kid who beat him the week before in Fosston. Cael dominated the match." Next, at 121 pounds, freshman...
