by Jeff Olsen Danny and Jill Geroy don't work in tuxedos and gowns. Or fancy shoes! Welcome to their hobby farm out by Hayes Lake near the old Dewey Thompson Store, which is no more. Once, as a sideline, the Geroys ran a canoe and paddle boat rental for nearby Hayes Lake State Park. Take it from Danny, who looks like he's right out of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Or the Klondike! They often get asked why they raise goats. "They're way more fun," he said. These aren't Rocky Mountain...
by Laurel Latham An Airbnb just five miles east of Warroad, Etta's Bin is a beautiful dome home that still manages to provide a warm, welcoming, cozy atmosphere in spite of the open floor plan and high metal walls. That's exactly the vibe Carmen Hontvet was going for when she designed Etta's Bin and collaborated with builder Joe Knutson to have her dream dome home become a reality. "It's been on my heart for a couple years to create a unique income property and build it to honor Grandma Etta,"...
by Jeff Olsen Shon Beito, a 1988 Roseau High School graduate and former standout wrestler for the Roseau Rams, turned out to be a reluctant interviewee. He'd rather avoid the limelight after performing honorably during the fall of Afghanistan while serving with the Minnesota Army National Guard in Kabul at the Hamid Karzai International Airport in 2021. Now a staff sergeant with Bravo Company 2-136, known as the Barbarians much like the Rams, Gators and Warriors, he was recently tracked down.... Full story
I read the following thoughts by Dutch Sheets in his daily "Give Him 15." It went like this. "My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus' blood and righteousness. I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus' name."(1) These are the opening lines of the song, Solid Rock, written in 1834 by Edward Mote, a Baptist pastor from England. The well-known refrain states: "On Christ, the Solid Rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand, All other ground is sinking sand."(2) The... Full story
Essay by: Levi Steinhauer Roseau Community School Mrs. Didrikson, Advanced English 11 The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines learn as "to gain knowledge or understanding of or skill in by study, instruction, or experience." I don't know when I started enjoying learning. It's probably in my genes. I am always on a journey to understand the things around me. More than half of my dad's side of the family are 'history buffs.' Many members of my family often talk at family events about everything...
Everyone has heroes. Mine is Mike Royko, the esteemed late Chicago columnist, who was the best there ever was. He was only 64 when he died in 1997 after suffering an aneurysm. Royko wrote great columns. He went after politicians, especially crooked ones, the muckety mucks, and had his readers laughing with his humorous takes on society and the working class. He was the son of a saloon keeper, and he spoke their language. Here's his piece on Saloon Etiquette: Never talk to someone who drinks with...
In our family I have the 'Girl Truck' and Kyle has the matching 'Boy Truck' to mine. We travel a bit and always drive to our destination. This way we can take the newspaper with and still get a paper out while vacationing. It works great, but the miles add up fast on the vehicle. My truck had enough miles so we decided to get Kyle a newer truck and his would be the vacation ride. I have a liking for black and red trucks and was hoping he would stick with the color theme. He did! He REALLY did s...

We are creatures of habit with established routines that we practice at certain times of each day: A routine for getting up (which will vary depending on if it's a school/workday or a day off). We have a routine for dinner time and a routine for getting ready for bed. I even have a routine for feeding Nova Mae and Edgar Allan. Our routines can be altered a little to meet the moment's needs, but they are seldom eliminated. While Nova Mae and I have been working in Florida for the past couple of...
Hello friends! This week will be a rerun of last week’s column. In this crazy world, we all get so busy that things get missed, overlooked at times. This rerun has my COMPLETE column piece from last week. A portion was missed, but feel it is a pivotal piece to the “Celebrations” column's point, so have asked the paper to reprint it in its entirety. That leads me to a quick “extra” note this week. When do we put our hands up and say “I am spread too thin, so I am sorry, but I have to pass on addi...

by Pastor Jason Stromstad A light October snow was falling softly on Scammon Bay, Alaska, as Pastor Jason Stromstad landed with Samaritan’s Purse staff and 400 pieces of fried chicken from Anchorage. Away for several weeks preaching in neighboring villages, then filling in for one year pastoring the Evangelical Covenant Church in Roseau Minnesota, Pastor Jason returned home to a new season—both in weather and in ministry. Situated on the edge of the Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge where the Kun River meets the Bering Sea, there are no roa...
