Here's Looking at the City of Roseau

November 12, 2016

Short of hurricanes, earthquakes and typhoons, Mayor Jeff Pelowski doesn't get too excited.

It's business as usual.

On Monday, prior to the Roseau City Council meeting, he was asked about Resolution No. 37-16, which runs nine, double-sided pages and deals with a joint powers agreement between the City of Roseau and the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

He explained that it's a renewal between the City of Roseau and the BCA.

"In order to access BCA data, we need this agreement to share data with the Roseau PD," he said, adding there is no cost.

"It's just basically a mutual aid agreement where we agree to work together to share data," he said, adding that on Tuesday, Roseau County Sheriff Steve Gust will bring the same agreement to the Roseau County Board.

"This has been going on for a long time," he said about the joint agreement with the city and the county and the BCA.

As far as the 2017 budget, it would be a topic of discussion.

"We're going to talk a little more about the budget because we have the budget hearing coming up in December," he said, adding that they will go over it but won't spend a lot on it at Monday's meeting.

"That's probably the big ticket item," he said, adding that it should be a fairly uneventful evening.

During the council meeting, they would approve the Liquor Licenses at nine establishments in Roseau.

Now, no one has to leave his motel room to wine and dine in the City of Roseau, which wasn't the case 45 years ago. Then, that option was non-existent.

So, what does a liquor license cost in Roseau?

"Depending on the liquor license, I believe it's $2,000, and it's been that way since I've been mayor," said Mr. Pelowski, who's been in office since 1999.

Over at the Roseau City Clerk's Office, Todd Peterson put the final price tag on the various licenses.

"A full liquor license is $2,000," he said, noting that it's an additional $200 for a Sunday liquor license.

"If you're just selling on-sale beer, the license is $250," he said, mentioning that Holiday, Shopko, and SuperOne have 3.2 beer off sale and the license also costs $250.

"If you just want to serve wine, it's $150, and a club liquor license is $300," he said, mentioning that the VFW might still be a club.

"With a club, you can still sell everything under a liquor license," he said. "The thing with a club, it's for the members only."
