Val Bernat, the Roseau native and retired infantry officer who can bark commands with the best of them and always goes right by the book, was humbly moved following the swearing in of his daughter-in-law, Lana Bernat, at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, on June 14, 2017, at 1600 hours.

The last time he issued the oath of office to her was in 1996 when he swore in both Lana and his son, Valent Bernat III, at NDSU in Fargo as 2nd Lieutenants.
