Roger Torkelson

Roger Torkelson, a salty, likable, and inventive character who can make machinery sing, is pulling the pin at the Roseau River Wildlife Management Area after 46 years as a catskinner and jack of trades.

On a piece of machinery, he is akin to A.J. Foyt coming around the final curve at the Indy 500 or Willie Shoemaker on the winning mount at the Kentucky Derby.

The question is: Why now, Roger? You're only 63!

"My body's telling me to get out," he said recently, and it sounded like he needed to see a chiropractor at any minute.

"My back is bad. Everything else is going bad. Time to get out so...
