It's a long route to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., on May 30-31.

A week ago Monday evening at the Roseau Community School Theater, the very best spellers in grades fifth through eighth vied for the top two spots to advance to the Northwest Regional Spelling Bee on Wednesday, Feb. 7, at Northland Community College in Thief River Falls.

It's not likely that the two local spellers advancing to Thief River Falls will have to spell scherenschnitte, one of the two winning words in the 2015 Scripps National Spelling Bee.
