A Holiday on ice at the Hayes Lake Derby

On Saturday at the Wannaska Lions 21st Annual Fishing Derby at Hayes Lake State Park, nobody complained if the fish weren't biting.

It was just being out on the ice and enjoying a nice day with a high of 18 above.

There wasn't a single mosquito.

Sitting at a picnic table just north of the beach were Roseau's Ryan Sprabary and his son, Weston.

"I'm originally from Dallas, Texas," he said. "My wife grew up in Wannaska, and we've lived up here now since '07," he said, holding a hotdog in his mitten.

"Texas doesn't get this cold, but we don't get to ice fish down there," he said.
