We're just getting too soft these days

On Monday, Roseau's own Newell Broten was cutting firewood in snow up to his knees, and this is how it is with those who grew up poor during the Great Depression and World War II.

They know hard work.

Still, he is an anomaly.

He turned 83 on Friday, February 23, and is having nothing to do with flying south for the winter and sitting on some beach listening to a bunch of old codgers complain about their bum knees and bad backs.

He'd be bored stiff.

If he isn't building something or chasing after something, he's hustling loose boards and scrap lumber - maybe some old cedar shingles - to cons...
