With Big Nick, who always makes good copy

On Monday, I stepped into a local bar that I had developed a liking for five decades ago when I was younger.

It was the early 1970s and the place had a great cast of characters, the best being J.C. Stone, a Boston chap who ended up here some years after World War II.

He added a real touch of class to these backwoods Swedes.

When he owned the joint, it was Stoney's Bar, and Mr. Stone operated it until he got elected the Roseau County Treasurer in a landslide.

Hell, he couldn't miss.

Everybody hung out in his joint. At the time, 19-year-olds could drink legally and Mr. Stone was their favorit...
