He was born on July 7, 1964 to Arthur and Joan (Welsch) Schmitz. He was baptized at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Red Lake Falls. Greg attended St. Joseph's School through 8th grade and graduated from Lafayette High School. He went on to college at Bemidji State University where he graduated in 1986 with a degree in graphic design.
