Arlene Besserud, 88, sat in her living room at North Star Apartments in Roseau gently caressing the back of her husband's hand as he recalled the one recollection that never escapes his mind.

Age has robbed Mr. Besserud's memory bank.

At 90, Lewis "Lewie" Besserud has fleeting memories of his uncle, Pvt. Lewis Besserud, who died 100 years ago last September in France during the Great War,

That one memory was highlighted decades ago by Ethel Simmons, who was eight-years-old when Pvt. Besserud stopped in 1918 to say goodbye to her and her mother, Mari Elton, before shipping out.
