California - Margaret Helen (Schmitke) Bugge was born August 1, 1930 to Carl and Alvina (Baier) Schmitke of Donaldson. She was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith. The family moved to the Stephen area in 1932. Margaret graduated from Stephen High School in 1948. She worked as a telephone operator in Stephen; moving to Thief River Falls to continue in this work when Stephen went to dial.
