Beer Without Borders

Brian Famias, Master Brewer

The old fire hall along the banks of the Warroad River is once again serving the Warroad community. This time as the location of Lake of the Woods Brewing Company, which recently opened their doors on Saturday, June 1. The goal of owner Eric Nerland, in partnership with LOW Brewing Co. in Kenora, Ontario, was to get beer into the hands of everyone on Lake of the Woods, both north and south of the 49th parallel.

"Opening weekend was absolutely amazing!" exclaimed Brittney Peterson, Head of Sales and Events at the brewing company. "Beers and conversation were flowing! Seeing customers in the tap room was so rewarding. We really want to thank all those who came out to support us and are so appreciative of the incredible support of the community!"

For those who have yet to visit this new business, LOW Brewing Co. staff are warm, welcoming and friendly. Views through bifolding doors bring the blues and greens of nature into the industrial interior of gray, white and black, for a stunning contrast. On tap are a choice of four ice cold beers to please the taste buds of true beer connoisseurs.

Blond Ale is a smooth, light and refreshing crushable ale. American Wheat has a bigger profile, but still remains a smooth easy drinking beer. Brown Ale has a rich, roasted nutty flavor, while India Pale Ale is a traditional ale with a hoppy flavor that packs a punch. Other crafty beers will be added to the menu as each beer is perfected..

Brian Famias, Master Brewer at LOW Brewing Co., uses the finest local ingredients coupled with an old world style brewing technique called krausening. Krausening is a traditional German method for carbonating beers without using sugars or other adjuncts. Instead actively fermenting malt wort is added to the fermented beer to provide the malted sugars needed for carbonation.

"Tours are scheduled through the beertenders on Fridays and Saturdays," explained Brittney. "All you have to do is ask the beertender to add you to the tour list!

A variety of local area venders will be scheduled monthly and customers are encouraged to order in food from local restaurants to enjoy along with their beer, like if they want to order a pizza delivered from Nomad's!

There's a private party space that may be rented for private events. We work with local catering companies for those who are interested."

Lake of the Woods Brewing Co. has several events planned throughout the summer months. On Thursday, June 20 from 5-7 p.m., meet Justin Johnson and see his MiniMod 48J race car. There will be an opportunity for the kids to get a photo next to his race car. Four tickets to Greenbush Race Park will be given away. Nashville country singer Dariann Leigh, a native of Karlstad, will be performing at the brewing co. on June 21, 6:30 to 10 p.m.

For those who would like to enjoy ale at home, LOW Brewing Company offer glass growler jugs that hold 64 ounces of your favorite ale. A growler can be refilled over and over, just follow the cleaning instructions on the tag.

"Great atmosphere and great service! Excited to have LOW Brewery in the community!" exclaimed Katie Dale

"Brewery is fun, well done, very open. Great to be able to sit outside on nice days and enjoy both food and beer. Beer is excellent!" Stated Ray DeGarmo

"We love it! Very relaxing, great beer, wonderful staff and atmosphere, the location is very relaxing. We will stop many evenings this summer! LOW Brewery is a great addition to our small town. The old fire hall is still serving Warroad well," Interjectd Lynn Hallett.

Stop in and see all that Lake of the Woods Brewing Company has to offer and find out what your neighbors are raving about! We are open Sunday thru Thursday 1-9 p.m., Friday and Saturday 11 a.m.- 10 p.m.
