50 years ago… Army First Lieutenant Valent P. Bernat, Jr. 23, Son of Mr. and Mrs. Valent Bernat, Sr. of Roseau received the Purple Heart on May 18 near Saigon, Vietnam.

 


5 years ago – June 14, 2014

Katie Engevik, RHS Class of 2009 and Jon Dahl, RHS Class of 2010, were selected as Fulbright Scholars. They both were leaving for Germany for participation in the program.

The Roseau County Museum received the donation of a 1917 RHS Yearbook from Rob Olsen the son of the late “Bob” Olsen a 1919 Roseau High School graduate.

Nashville country music duo Kari and Billy, including Roseau native Kari Nelson-Arnold, was performing at the Roseau County Fair.

The descendants of Jakob Grahn were having a family reunion on July 26-27.

Roseau High School baseball seniors this year were Ryan Norberg, Jack Helgeson, Sean Thomasson, Jacob Eaton, Alex Halstensgard, Alex Strand, Kyle Hanson and AJ Hogenson.

10 years ago – June 13, 2009

Roseau was named 20th ‘Best Town for Sportsmen’ by Outdoor Life. In Minnesota, only Rochester placed ahead of Roseau. It ranked in the ninth spot.


Wojo’s was to sponsor the 2nd annual “Think Pink” event coupled with the 4th Annual Greenbush Rodeo.

Specialist Tyler Wulff, son of Rod and Jill Wulff, recently returned from duty in Iraq.

Palmer and Glenda Norberg were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house on June 20 at their home.

At the Roseau Teachers Association Spring Tea, Amanda Massaro was given the Roseau Teachers Association Education Scholarship and Nick Zagone received the Friends of Education Award.

Byron and Laura Strand of Roseau were celebrating their 25th anniversary on June 16.

25 years ago – June 10, 1994

A Roseau man, Bill McLead, survived a nail gun accident while working at Woodland Containers in Roseau. The nail penetrated three inches into his brain. He was lucky that he will make a full recovery after surgery to remove the nail.


New construction started for a Subway Sandwich franchise between the DQ and AmericInn.

The First (Swedish) Lutheran of Salol was having a 75th anniversary in July, 1994. Sylvia Christopherson Hunt donated an album for pictures and articles that people would like to share.

Confederate Railroad and Little Texas will be grandstand entertainment at the Roseau County Fair.

Janis (Rice) Hardy, a 1964 graduate of Roseau High School was featured in the May 6 issue of the Minnesota Star Tribune.

Roseau Ram boys golfer Bryan Lundbohm finished 19th at the Minnesota State Golf Tournament held in St. Cloud.

Nathan Anderson was selected to attend the 46th Annual American Legion Boy’s State to be held at St Olaf’s College on June 12-18.

Roseau graduates from UND this Spring were Debra Marlene Carlson, Lyle Richard Erickson, Christopher Scott Gotziaman, Gretchan Lee Hafdahl, Chad Jason McDonald and Daniel Ray Moser.

40 years ago – June 14, 1979

Dr. Cheng Feng Cheng, a native of Formosa (Taiwan), started medical practice in Greenbush, associating with Dr Kruger.

Jeff Goos, A Roseau native, was honored by being presented with the Mike Davis Memorial Award at the Annual Athletic Awards Banquet of the University of Minnesota-Crookston.

Kim Anderson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs Harold Anderson of Pencer, was singing with the All State Lutheran choir beginning June 17.

Keith Hedlund, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dell Hedlund of Roseau graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College on June 3, with a degree in psychology and business.

Art Mattson, the local dozer man in Salol, was busy with his cat clearing an area east of town on the Irvin Sjodin property.

Lind Motor Supply has scheduled a grand opening in Roseau in the newly remodeled building purchased recently from the Mission Covenant Congregation. Gary Gustafson was the store manager.

50 years ago – June 12, 1969

Mrs. Lucille Landby, a Warroad public school teacher, was named Roseau County Secondary Teacher of the Year.

Army Sergeant Byron G. Cole, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chancy Cole, Sr., of Warroad received the Purple Heart on May 3 near Pleiku, Vietnam.

A sixth drowning in Lake of the Woods in a period of a week was feared as authorities continue the search for Sven Arthur Mattson whose empty boat was found floating near Long Point. He is the father of Roseau pharmacist Don Mattson.

An open house was scheduled at the home of Mr. and Mrs Earl Hess of Wannaska on June 15 on the occasion of their 60th wedding anniversary.

Mr. and Mrs. Floyd B. Olson are the parents of a daughter born June 2. She was named Lisa Margaret.

75 years ago – June 14, 1944

Delbert R. Dieter S 1/C of Roseau and Miss Eunice L Nyland of Malung were united in the holy bonds of matrimony on June 11. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Pearson served as best man and matron of honor.

Three couples of the Roselund Church community near Badger were honored at a Silver Wedding celebration. The three were, Mr. and Mrs. A.B. Larson, Mr. and Mrs. M.C. Lindeland and Mr. and Mrs. Ben Mickelson.

Mrs. Laura Sjoberg and Peter Sjoberg sold their 160 acre farm in Spruce Township to A.E. Bohlinger.

Ole G Ode, Moose pioneer, died at the A.B. Larson home on June 13 after a three year illness.

Leaving for Boy Scout Camp at Itasca State Park were Duane Dieter, Ward, Adrian and Myron Wenner, Edward and Darrell Schwarz, Mike Delmore, Robert Row, Joel Meade, Jimmie Roadfeldt, Robert Hamerl, George Peterson, Lavern Bjorkman, Robert Bergland, Clayton Strandlie, Gordon Oie, Gale Mitchell, Herbert Minarik, Robert Harris, Jack Hansel, and Lloyd Michal.

Mr. and Mrs Adolph Oseid brought their young son here to submit to an appendectomy at the Budd Hospital.
