Submitted by Tracy Borowicz On January 24, the Lady Rams hosted the Northern Freeze. It was a busy night at the school as both boys and girls teams entertained the Freeze with all levels playing. The Rams started the game with intense defense which turned into steals and easy baskets. The Rams jumped out to a 20-0 lead as the Rams had the pedal to the metal. The Rams held a commanding lead 45-14 at halftime. The Rams were using pressure defense and crafty passing to take control of the first half. The Rams slowed things down in the second half and all players were able to get good minutes. The Rams beat the Freeze 65-33. The Rams shot 41% from the field and 66% from the free throw line for the game. Scoring for the Rams were Katie 32, Julia 13, Hannah 7, Kayla 4, Shavonda 4, Morgan 3 and Faith 2. Katie dished out 5 assists. Julia led in rebounds with 5. Katie led the defensive attack with an amazing 12 steals, followed by Faith with 4.

In less than 24 hours the Lady Rams were traveling to Bemidji to take on the Menahga Braves. Menahga previously was a single A school and were at the state tournament last year. Freshman guard Kayla Bachleitner started the game and was able to score the first 4 points of the game. It was great to see Kayla hit those early shots, as it took some pressure off Katie. The Rams were tested by Menahga early on in the game. Menahga was able to hit a few shots from the outside to keep the game close at half time, with the Rams leading 33-25. Menahga came storming back in the second half to cut the lead to 2 points, but Katie was able to drain 9/10 free throws to come away with the win 59-56. The Rams missed some easy shots in the second half which helped the Braves stay in the game. The Braves also were a very good defensive team. The Rams improved to 14-3. Julia Braaten played limited minutes as she was injured, but other players stepped up. Scoring for the Rams were Katie 31, Hannah 6, Julia 5, Faith 5, Morgan 4, Kayla 4 and Faith 4. Katie led the team in assists with 3 and rebounds with 8.

On January 28 the Rams traveled to Crookston to take on the Pirates in a battle of Section 8AA opponents. The Pirates and the Rams have similar records and are fighting for the top spot in Section 8AA North. Freshman Kayla again stepped up and made the first basket (three pointer) for the Rams. It is great to see young kids step up and make big shots. With the clock expiring, sophomore guard Hanna Mooney drained a long 2 pointer. The Rams played their best defense of the year in the first half as the Rams led 29-24 at halftime. Crookston came out ready to play in the second half and took the lead 33-31, but then the Rams answered with nine points of their own. The Rams seemed to be in the driver’s seat as they did go up by ten points midway through the second half, but Crookston was not going away and Emma Borowicz (Katie’s cousin) was able to get loose for a few three pointers and layups for the Pirates. The last minute of the game was intense as Crookston took the lead 59-58 on a layup. Katie was fouled and made the first free throw to tie the game with fourteen seconds left. Katie missed the second free throw, but Morgan Boroos got the rebound and passed to Katie who made a reverse layup to put the Rams up by two points with ten seconds to go. Neither team had any timeouts left. Crookston 8th grade guard dribbles the ball up the court and Katie fouls her at the half line. With 3 seconds to go, the 8th grader for the Pirates makes the first free throw to pull within one point. The next free throw is missed and Crookston narrowly almost contains the rebound, but goes off of Emma Borowicz for Crookston. The Rams win 61-60 to improve to 15-3. People listening to the radio said it was hard to listen to because with Borowicz players on both teams it was very confusing. (haha) The Rams shot 41% for the game and made only 9/17 free throws. Scoring for the Rams were Katie 40, Hannah 7, Julia 4, Morgan 5, Kayla 3 and Shavonda 2. Katie led in assists with 3. Katie led in rebounds with seven, followed by Morgan and Shavonda with five each. Katie had a monster night by grabbing ten steals for the team.

On January 30th the Lady Rams entertained the BGMR Gators in Roseau. The Rams were ready to take it to the Gators early, but Katie landed in foul trouble early in the first half due to her aggressive nature. The Rams played the last eight minutes of the first half with Katie on the bench with three fouls. The Rams were able to control the ball and slow it down with Katie on the bench and the Rams found themselves ahead at halftime 22-20. Hannah Mooney had a great night finding her shot throughout the game. With Katie back in the game in the second half, the Rams were able to push the ball up the court for a victory over the Gators 67-49. The Rams again missed many easy shots and only shot 35% from the field and could only convert 17/31 free throws. Julia led the team in assists with five. Shavonda was dominating on the boards as she collected eleven, followed by Julia with nine. Katie led the defense again with eight steals for the game. It was nice to see the team play well without Katie in the game, but the Rams need to stay out of foul trouble to be really successful.

On February 4th the Rams hosted 8AAA Bemidji. This was a last minute add for the Rams who were looking to boost their QRF rating before tournament time and play good competition. The Rams started the game on fire, the Rams were hitting shots and playing very good defense. The Rams jumped out to a 14-6 lead and headed into halftime leading 33-23. Katie again was plagued with foul trouble, but the Rams were able to keep the lead. During the second half, the Rams were able to push the lead to 20 points and ended up winning 65-49. The Rams improved to 17-3. Scoring for the Rams were Katie 38, Julia 17, Hanna 4, Shavonda 4 and Kayla 2. Julia had a good game as she suffered an ankle injury last week, it was great to see her close to 100%. The Rams were a perfect 14/14 for the game from the free throw line.
