Submitted by Tracy Borowicz On February 11 the Rams hosted section 8AA opponent Park Rapids. The Rams were defensively all over the Park Rapids Panthers from the get go. The Lady Rams played a very good first half defensively, which led to opportunities offensively. Katie made a few great passes down the court to teammate Julia for easy buckets. The Rams were able to head into the locker room at halftime with the lead 46-24. The Rams slowed things down in the second half as Coach Didrikson went to her bench. Eighth grader Anya Severson was recently put on the Varsity and scored her first bucket on a free throw. Way to go Anya!! The Rams beat the Park Rapids Panthers 71-43. Scoring for the Rams were Katie 36, Julia 16, Morgan 6, Faith 5, Anya 3, Kayla 2 and Hannah 2. Katie had a fun night dishing out ten assists. Hannah led with rebounds for the team with seven, followed by Julia with five. Katie also led the defensive attack with six steals.
On February 13 the Rams traveled to the Red Lake Reservation to take on Red Lake. The Rams started the game up 8-2, but Red Lake came storming back and took advantage of their strength down low as they muscled their way to the basket. The Rams found themselves down at halftime 41-37. The Rams were rushing shots, throwing the ball away and not being physical under the basket. The Rams continued to struggle in the second half with throwing the ball away and a lack of effort on hustle. With three minutes to go the Rams found themselves down by fourteen and coach Didrikson called a time out. The Rams had several turnovers in a row and gave up some easy buckets, Roseau was at their lowest of the game. Then, all of a sudden, Katie got a steal and went full court for a layup and the Rams came roaring back on great defensive intensity and three pointers made by Katie, Hannah and Julia. Wow, it was a great comeback. With 30 seconds left in the game the Rams went ahead by one point. All the Rams needed to do was play good defense, but the Rams lost their composure for a second and committed a silly foul and that put Red Lake on the free throw line and they made their shots to take the lead. The Rams had the ball with 10 seconds to go and were able to get off one shot but it was blocked. The Rams were defeated 76-74. The Rams played without post player Shavonda Bender, which they could have really used her help, but the Rams can’t afford to play that poorly for most of the game. It was amazing to see the Rams storm back the last few minutes, but a little too late. Junior guard Katie Borowicz had a stellar game contributing a career high 48 points, followed by Hannah with 10, Julia 9, Masynn Janicke 3, Morgan 2 and Kayla 2. The Rams shot 32% from the field and 94% from the free throw line, where Katie was 15/15 for the game. Katie led in assists with four. Julia and Morgan both had a monster night on the boards as they both collected twelve rebounds, followed by Katie with nine. The Rams need to regroup and to work to play with more desire and communication on the court. The Rams’ record sits at 18-6.
On February 15 the Rams hosted Kittson County Central (KCC) in a double header with the boys. The Rams came out aggressively on defense and created easy points. The Rams played a pretty good first half as they found themselves leading 44-23 at half. Sophomore Hannah Mooney had the hot hand early on as she was leading in scoring for most of the first half. It was great to see sophomore post player Shavonda Bender back after missing a few games with a sprained ankle. The Rams were not as sharp in the second half defensively and allowed KCC to hit some open shots, but the Rams were victorious 76-55. Scoring for the Rams were Katie 26, Julia 18, Hannah 16, Shavonda 6, Morgan 4, Faith 2, Emma Bassingthwaite 2, and Janna Preteau 2. The Rams shot 45% from the field and 78% from the free throw line. Katie led in assists with 6. Julia led in rebounds with 8, followed by Morgan and Katie with 6 each. Katie also led the team with 5 steals, followed by Julia with 3. The Rams improve to 19-6 with one game remaining in the regular season against EGF.
