The Thompson Forest Road is now open to traffic.  A stretch from the Bemis Campground to the Root Road had to be re-shaped to improve water drainage on the road surface.  Mulching and seeding still need to be completed.  Weather dependent, the hope is to complete the seeding yet this year; but it may have to wait until next spring.  Right of way work is also continuing on the first 4 miles of the River road.  This project is expected to be completed the beginning of November.    

Staff have been busy working on next year's stand exam list-checking on sites for potential timber sales.  The drier conditions have given loggers the opportunity to begin harvesting sites that generally require frozen soil conditions.  If individuals are looking for bough or fuelwood permits please feel free to call the offices at Warroad, Wannaska or Grygla sites are available.  Timber sale activity is expected to occur this year in the western fringes of the work area in places such as central Marshall County and eastern Kittson County. 

Recent snowfalls have lowered the area fire danger.  However, burning permits are still required in areas with less than 3" of snow on the ground.  Forestry staff have started to light some slash piles in the forest area to aid in preparing sites for planting this spring.  A few staff have also been re-deployed to aid in the western fires.  Deer rifle season is just around the corner have fun and be safe.
