Being a columnist can be enlightening at times

This one time the phone rang in the office when just Lonnie Swanson and I were working on a late afternoon.

Just a week earlier in late July 1990 when the First Gulf War was about to begin, I penned a column about the strange customs of Arabs - and what pissed them off - like turning the bottom of your sandal upwards, which is offensive to an Arab.

Naturally, I threw in some off the wall humor.

When the phone rang, I picked up the receiver and this bloke with somewhat of an accent asked for me.

Unbeknown to me, Lonnie was listening too.

"You got him, brother," I said.
