Roseau- Jane Norma Smith was born January 7, 1944 in Thief River Falls to Clarence and Anna (Lapic) Smith. She attended school in Holt and Newfolden, then went to one year of junior college at Northland Community and Technical College in Thief River Falls.

Jane worked for many years as the office manager at Cenex Farmer's Union Oil Company in Roseau. She took her work seriously but was well liked by her co-workers who have commented that she always had a smile on her face.
